Well i've comitted career suicide. i've had several arrests in the past and did not report. i perjured myself. my dishonesty and shame has finally caught up with me. i got my 2nd dui 3 yrs ago and haven't worked since. i haven't reported it or any of the arrests. i've started attending AA and contacted the GNA and got an advocate. now it's time to report to the GBON. i can't afford a lawyer. i KNOW i'm going to be reprimanded harshly or they may just take my license for life. i don't blame them. i've carried this shame way too long. is there anyone out there (georgia) or any state that has similar experience and can tell me what they went thru? thanks in advance for all responses

I haven't been through a similar experience. I do strongly encourage you to somehow find a lawyer to help you if you can. I know you can't afford it, but when dealing with BONs the outcomes are generally more favorable for those who have a lawyer, since that lawyer is working the represent the nurse's own interests. The BON doesn't care about the nurse's interests--they only care about their own interests. Maybe the GNA can help you out.

More importantly: you need to put your recovery first and foremost, even before dealing with the BON. In addition to attending AA, talk to your healthcare provider about your addiction and for help getting started in recovery.

Best of luck as you go through this.

thank you meriwhen. i don't see how i am going to be able to afford a lawyer. i haven't worked in 3 yrs. i had a savings which is dwindling down. due to the addictive disease, i didn't jump on this when i had the money. the last 3 yrs have been very selfish. i can't believe my life has come to this. but, i know there are people out there who have survived and i will too. i guess the worst thing they BON can do is yank my license for life. oh well, maybe for the best. i'm trying to get back into college and study for a degree in Psych for substance abuse counceling. i am also signing back up into the behavioral health clinic here where there will be a paper trail of counceling, drug screens, and sub abuse classes attended. i will of course continue to attend AA daily. please pray for me ya'll.....

Take recovery one day at a time...that's all you can really do.

I hope you can get things sorted out with your BON, and I wish you the best in both your recovery and career even if it means moving outside of nursing.
