Aftercare

Nurses Recovery

Published

Im going to be starting my aftercare therapy at the end of January. Does anybody know what this entails?? Also getting ready to start NA meetings next week, does anybody have any feedback on this? I'm just really nervous about it all. I'm so happy I found this forum it really helps to know I'm not alone in my recovery.

Thank you Meri for your advice. I was hoping on starting this week but looks like it'll be next week (parents are going out of town, so don't have anyone to watch my daughter). I've very scared on taking the first step but I know I'll be ok. I've overcome a very hard time already with my recovery, been clean for the last 2yrs. I think it's only going to be beneficial for me to talk to others like me. I have a wonderful support system but most don't understand what it's like to suffer from addiction.

All the meetings iI've been to are children friendly. I didn't have to do aftercare but here in Florida you have to attend weekly peer group meetings. They have helped a lot and thats how I found my new job. We are all close and talk ofter outside of the weekly group.

That's great moorefun11. I now live in a rural area so I'm limited to what groups are out there. The NA group I'm planning to attend is probably child friendly to but having a 5 yr old with many questions wouldnt be a good fit.

And no one says that you have to do the first step at that very first meeting :) You do the first step whenever you are ready. You're not competing against anyone to see who can do them the fastest, nor do you have to meet a timeline. It's all in your hands.

Thank you Meriwhen for your kind words, I'll do just that. All I can do is one step at a time.

I was ordered to attend Aftercare for one year when I entered into a contract with the NV BON. It consisted of a 2 hour meeting once a week and I loved it. In fact, so much so that I have continued it throughout my contract. March 2013 will mark 4 years on contract (1 left to go after that...yipee!) and I continue Aftercare because it has become such an integral part of my recovery. We have nurses, lawyers, construction workers, secretaries, unemployed folks in there. It's a small group (less than 20) and we are a tight knit group. One nurse has been going for about 6 years now.

I feel that my Aftercare group does more for my recovery than my nurse support group, which I am required to attend once a week. I will be happy to stop the nurse support group (I think) but have no intentions of leaving Aftercare. I took a hiatus once when I was going through a grief support group and it was pretty brutal. Not only was I processing all these emotions I had buried since my mom passed away suddenly 3 years ago, but I was now doing it with less support and I was happy to be back in group again. It's probably one of the things I"m most grateful to the nursing board for...introducing me to AA and ordering me to this wonderful group!
