I have just come to the realization that the Houston area no longer has any PNP programs when there used to be 3 or 4 a couple of years ago. Just wondering, does anyone happen to have any idea why this might be the case? People always say to go for FNP because its more marketable, but what about those who have absolutely no desire to work with adults?? Now it's like if one wants to do only pedi, they either have to relocate or just go the FNP route. Do you guys think that could potentially be a problem in regards to finding a employment in the pediatric setting within the Houston area??

Everything you just said is what I am thinking and wondering.

Specializes in PICU.

Check out the NP job listings for the peds clinics in your area and see if they are asking for FNP or PNP or either. I am in the DFW area and the clinics here hire PNPs. I am doing my program online at UAB and I have been very happy with the program. It is a lot easier to have online classes if you have to work full-time while in school. Just something to think about, if you can't get a PNP degree locally.

Specializes in ICU, CV-Thoracic Sx, Internal Medicine.

The FNP route should cover you. The way I see it, put up with the adult rotation and coursework. Once you have that FNP Certification you can go focus on the peds and forget all the adult mumbo jumbo.
