I am going to be starting a new job soon as an NP in the surgery dept of a large hospital. I am a ACNP originally and then sat for the GNP cert 2 years ago. I have critical care and cardiology experience, but my most recent job was in pain management. I tell you all that in order to ask my question. Does anyone have any recommendations for books or online education I can do in the next couple of weeks? I feel like I need to bone up on my surgical knowledge. I will not be in the OR, at least not yet. They are going to train me to put in lines, etc. Any help with this or your real life experiences would be much appreciated.

Check out NIFA's website...lots of good OR education and they have basically a half-price sale on the RNFA cert for NP's through the end of the month. Probably worth talking to them as I have never known them to have a sale. Also check out Welcome to CMR4CME | Chamberlain Medical Resources as they have some procedural seminars like central lines, etc.

Youtube. Find out what procedures you will have to learn and watch videos. In the modern era you shouldn't have to spend much money to learn what you need.

And don't forget about the reps. Usually they are hanging out in the OR and would love to show you how their equipment works.

Thanks for your suggestions. I have already asked for a list and hope they will get it to me before I start the job.
