how much orientation did you get when you started out as a brand new np, i had less than 2 weeks, and was sent off on my own to a my own site and my md is at another site and this past week it was decided to have me spend 2 days a week with my md to get more experience and exposure to different problems with my md. hello i thought this should have happened in the beginning, when i mentioned that maybe this job was not a good fit they were like don't give up we just feel that you should have been with your md, so now i am stressed out wondering if they are doubting my ability to practice but they don't have me going over to my md's office untill the last week of july help advice

Just answering the OP - I started as a new grad NP in a hospital setting in pre-admissions testing/SPU. There are two other experienced NPs there who do the same job, so they were my mentors and continue to help me if I have any questions. I would say that after the first week going in rooms with my preceptor, I went in to see patients by myself and then would only have her come in if I had questions. I would guestimate that I was "officially" on orientation for about 2 mos - and then they were adjusting the schedule to add more patients.

I really admire you, pedspnp, because to do what you do takes a ton of confidence and knowledge. I still am asking the other NPs or am consulting with the anesthesiologists (my collaborating MDs) on a daily basis, since surgery/anesthesia is new to me (I was an ED/cardiac nurse for 13 yrs prior to becoming a NP).

Hang in there and best wishes with everything - it sounds like things are looking up!
