CA NP LICENSE Application

Specialties NP

Published

For those who have applied and got your NP certificate, my hats off to you. I am in the process of starting the application. However do our preceptors really need to put the their social security number on it as well as sign it?

My preceptors are in another State and are rather busy. All the responses are greatly appreciated, thanks in advance!

OK, I'm a bit confused with your question.

There are 3 Methods to earn an NP License in CA:

Method 1 - For graduates of a CA-approved NP program. All one needs to do to meet this is to send in the "Verification of Nurse Practitioner Academic Program" form signed by the NP program director. Nowhere in that form does it ask for names of preceptors and their SSN.

Method 2 - For graduates of out-of-state NP programs. The applicant needs to have a national organization (ANCC, AANP, PNCB, NCC, AACN) submit the "Verification of NP Certification by National Organization" in addition to the "Verification of Nurse Practitioner Academic Program" form.

Method 3 - This is a though method to meet. It basically allows individuals who did not attend an NP program but has maybe practiced in a similar capacity (as a Nurse Practitioner) and seeks licensure based on equivalency. This is where you need to ask a physician to vouch for your clinical competency to function as a nurse practitioner. The form does requires the physician's SSN and full info including medical license. You also need a Nurse Practitioner to vouch for your clinical experience with a corresponding from that asks for dates of when the NP supervised you in the clinical setting.

Having said this, which one of the 3 Methods above match your profile as an applicant? You only need to comply with requirements based on which method you are seeking.

Is California that confusing? there seems to be a lot of misunderstanding with NP license application in this state.

OOh ok, I get it now thanks Juan! When you put it that way I guess it's not that as confusing. The problem is.. no one can over get through to the CALI board of nursing..they are too busy and never pick on the phone!! Thanks again!

No problem. I was a Method 2 applicant too and it wasn't that painful after all is said and done. California can be quite "unusual" for an outsider like I was before I moved. The regulations from the tax board, to the DMV, to the BRN, etc seem "foreign" but I'm now used to it...lol.
