I have recently received my BSN ( as if my username didn't give it away!) and I am leaning towards obtaining an MSN in management. Right now my immediate goals are just to learn how to be a good nurse but as far as long term goals to set myself up for a management position I am kind of at a loss. Does anyone have some good advice for what I should do to set myself up to prepare for a management career? ( Obviously besides getting my Master's) Any comments would be appreciated. Thanks!

Well, I am finishing my Master's, which in my state is pretty much a requirement for management. I have asked my manager at work to be my mentor, and so she gives me projects to manage on my own every week (this is above and beyond my job and I generally am not paid for it). I am also seeking advanced certification in my specialty, and I am going to a convention next month that offers management training in my specialty. I have worked as an RN for 5 years though, and I think it takes a lot of bedside nursing to really understand that piece of it. Throughout my career I have always been one to seek opportunities to improve my work environment, and I encourage you to do the same. Be vocal about your aspirations, and always work to build partnerships.
