ECU alternate entry MSN 2012

U.S.A. North Carolina

Published

Found out I was accepted to ECU's AE MSN program beginning in August. Has anyone else who is accepted want to open a discussion about moving, housing, the program etc?

Would be nice if there was a early/mid summer orientation to give us some time to work out some of these issues. I may be heading to G'ville sometime this week--anybody have suggestions for areas/neighborhoods/complexes to check out?

Kenthomas- I tried to pm you but don't have enough posts. Can you try to send me one? I agree, I hope there is some sort of gathering this spring/summer to get to know everyone.

I've been accepted to the program as well. I'm looking to move there full time but I currently live in NY and don't anticipate going down to search for housing - so basically I'm open to living with a roommate, and if it's someone who can scope out the housing situation from a closer vantage point, all the better :) If anyone in class of 2012 wants to talk housing, send me a message. Congrats, y'all!

I got in too! I am about to send in my acceptance. I live in Winston-Salem so commuting definitely isnt an option. I'll be looking for a place to rent as well. Congrats yall! I've heard great things about the ECU's nursing program!

Folks-- I'm a year ahead of you in AE. Housing is plentiful and cheap in Greenville, but you just need to be wary of what part of town you look in, and proximity to undergraduate housing. I live in a complex less than .5 mile from the college of nursing building in a 1 BR/$425 month.

Be prepared to never feel like they've given you enough information in the program. It feels like pulling teeth to get them to tell you anything ahead of time.

First semester we did have class TWF, with tests on Tuesday mornings with a full day of lecture afterwards and on Wednesdays. Labs were on Fridays. Second semester we have clinicals 0630-330 MT and tests Friday AM followed by lecture until 4. The second semester is broken up into two sections. The first section of clinicals has three hospitals to choose from: Nash in Rocky Mount, CarolinaEast in New Bern and Lenoir Memorial in Kinston. Each hospital had 10 students. The second half of the semester after spring break, everyone is placed within Vidant Medical Center (formerly PCMH) with some outpatient rotations within the hospital system.

We've been told that they change class and clinical days from year to year, based on professor's schedules and the makeup of the class (amount of commuters).

Another heads up, student services went through a phase of losing lots of our paperwork we had to turn in the first day of the program (immunization records, background checks, , drug screen results etc, etc) So make sure you keep a copy of everything.

Congrats on acceptance and good luck!

ElizabethR11, thanks for the great info! Do you mind me asking which complex you live in? Also, from your experience is it valuable stay near campus versus commuting an hour or so? Did you have many reasons to be on campus outside class hours--library research, etc? Thanks!

Davidnc- I live in Brighton Park apartments. I felt like it has been to my benefit being near campus. The clinical sites for the first half of the spring semester were all between 45-55 minutes drive from campus. About a third of my class commutes every day, some as far as from Emerald Isle and west of Raleigh. The commuters talk about being tired of driving a lot, especially on test days. Other than commuting for class, labs and clinicals, I rarely have to go to the library for any research. Almost all papers, posters, presentations, etc can all be completed by logging into the library offsite to access materials online. If relocation is an option, I'd recommend it. Commuting on days where you have to be in your clinical setting around 0630 two days in a row is tough. Hope this helps!

Thanks! It's so helpful to have the perspective of someone currently in the program.

Moved to NC Nursing Programs for more response.

Good luck to all of you!

I have been accepted into the program for Fall 2012. I am moving from Utah and am having a hard time finding a place to live, without actually being there. Can anyone give me some ideas of great apartment complexes within walking distance to the health sciences campus? I need a 2bdr apartment, I am moving with my husband and 2yo. Any responses would be helpful! Thanks!

I would recommend looking at Treybrooke Apartments. They are literally right across the street from the health sciences campus on 5th street. Here is the link for the complex! Hope this helps.

Treybrooke Apartments : Greenville, NC

Treybrooke Apartments : Floorplans : 1 Bedroom

Are you walking because you'd like to or because you have to? Because I wouldn't recommend walking to and from the Hospital, especially after dark.

I left ECU in July of 2011 after graduating with a BA degree in German and minor in Art History. I'm actually going back to to ECU to take pre-reqs, so I can apply to the Alt Entry program for a Fall 2013 start.

Anyway!

My point is, the area around the Hospital can be sketchy. It is cheap, but further away from daily living places, like shopping. If you're living near the Hospital, the "closest" grocery store is a kinda crummy Food Lion. Everything else is a 10 minute or so drive into town.

I lived in an apartment about 15 minutes or so away from the Hospital that was really nice and the area wasn't bad either. It's on the "other side" of town, closer to Winterville, but also close to a Harris Teeter (4-5 min), Food Lion (3 min), the Mall (5 min), and other shopping. The apartments were Melbourne Park, owned by Wainright Properties. I swear, they own about 60% of all rental properties in Greenville, but I've lived with them for 2 years and the experience wasn't bad.

The apartment was incredibly quiet, with a mixture of students and professionals. I was a student at the time and worked on the other side of the Hospital. The drive is a straight shot up Arlington, so it's really not that bad. I shared a 2 BR/2 BA with my boyfriend at $655/mo with water and sewer included. You can also rent a washer and dryer for $30/mo.

If I remember correctly, there's a bus stop near the apartment complex and I'm sure there are buses going to and from the Hospital if you need them. Plus, you're a LOT closer to the grocery store at MP than at Treybrooke, if you do have to walk.

If you can get away with it, live on the southeast side of town nearest Winterville. It's more family friendly, quiet, cheaper and certainly safer. Areas around the Hospital and behind the University . . . aren't.

I hope this helps!
