Advice, please!

Hi everyone!

I could really use some advice! I recently applied for a new grad job at UNC Children's Hospital, and was asked to interview. I applied for an oncology floor, and was asked to interview for the bone marrow transplant unit because general oncology isn't hiring after all. The training period is six weeks long. Is that long enough? These kids are critically ill, and if I did something wrong, I would feel horrible! :crying2:

Also, I live in CA, so I'd be moving across the country and wouldn't know anyone. From what I hear, people in NC are super friendly though... I'm just a big baby and scared of moving across the country and feeling lonely and isolated.

So... any other "transplants" to NC have any advice for me? Anyone working at UNC have any advice as far as interviewing and working there? Are the nurses generally welcoming/supportive towards new grads?

My advise...get your foot in the door. Although I do think 6 weeks is too short for someone with no experience. The 3 hospitals I have worked for offer 12 week orientation programs for New Grads.

But if you don't mind me asking...If you weren't sure about moving across the country because you would feel isolated and alone, then why did you apply in the first place?

I moved here from Iowa last fall and the people here are super nice. Granted I do have a brother who lives in town but since he is newly married I don't see him often so it's just me and my family and we are doing fine. My oldest daughter loves her school and my little one loves her babysitter. My husband though is yet to find a permanent job but works for a temp agency.

I have worked in 3 hospitals since I moved here as a New Grad last year and now accepted a full-time Hospice job. Cost of living here is less than CA and expect hospitals to pay you for $20 - $21/hr for no experience plus shift diff if you work overnights.

Good luck with your decision. I hear UNC is hard to get into so I would at least go to the interview and check it out.
