Specializes in NICU.

Hi everyone! I excited to announce that I am going to be a NICU nurse! I accepted a position at a hospital in Houston, TX. I just graduated last week with my bachelors and I was wondering if anyone would be able to give me any tips on being a NICU nurse. I know many of you have been doing this a long time, and I would love any input you have. I would also like to purchase a high acuity neonatal reference text. Do you have one you prefer over another? Any other books or apps you can recommend for a new graduate? I will be in a year long residency program, and they have books they supply as well, but I would love to see what works for you. Any specific blogs, Facebook Pages, etc that I should join? Thanks so much! I am SUPER excited to begin my journey as a NICU nurse :-)

That is so wonderful that you are so excited into becoming a NICU nurse. :0) I applaud that very much because as nurses we should love what we do and be happy with what unit we are on as well. We should also learn a lot of new and improved nursing techniques and methods in order to help our patients out. Our patients need us to help care for them and be there for them as well. I believe Amazon has some books on neonatal care that would be helpful and they also may have some apps or computerized information about neonatal care. I tend to like Lippencott nursing textbooks. They are really well-written and expressed in many good ways. They also show great visual pictures which is helpful; especially when you are learning a new technique in nursing. I know Apple has some nursing apps that you can purchase through itunes. Congratulations on graduating. That is fantastic. Just remember that when you are a neonatal nurse, always remember to cherish the babies and give them lots and lots of tender loving care. Treat the babies as if they were glass and always have hope that they will be OK and that you are doing your best to help them. Thank you for posting and good luck to you. Marcy
