Please help- NYU or University of Rochester!!

U.S.A. New York

Published

When i first applied to nursing school, I didnt really consider how expensive nursing schools cost.. and I made a mistake by not applying to some state schools. My choices are NYU or University of Rochester. University of Rochester is cheaper in tuition (by 20,000) and the program is shorter (1 year v.s 1.5 years). However, some people told me that NYU will give me more connection since it is in the city. Thus, I will more likely find a job and with higher paid (which is important at this time). Also, I am in the Rochester masters program v.s NYU is a BSN program-that allows direct entry to their masters program. I've never visited rochester before, but i dont intend in staying there after graduation- will it be harder for me to find a job in the city verse if I go to NYU and have connections there. Thank you for you help.. I really really dont know which school to select!!

This is exactly what I was looking for too! I am waiting to hear from NYU and am working on my U of R application (for January start). I have family in Rochester and the cost of living is much lower, but NYU does have more scholarships and a wider variety of clinical placements. So both have their benefits. I am eventually looking at Masters programs in Midwifery, mostly in the greater NYC area. So I'll most likely be looking for jobs in the NYC area when I graduate.

So my main concern right now is exactly the same...will it be that much more difficult to get a job in NYC after graduating from UofR than NYU? I'd be grateful for some advice as well! Thanks!

It will not be hard to find a job if you go to Rochester. A lot of people love to believe that NYU is the job connection college of the world, and put it on this different level but to be perfectly honest, a degree in NY is a degree in NY, whether the school is in the city or not. People were told the same thing at my college (Long Island Univeristy) and they had no problem getting jobs in hospitals such as Mount Sinai and NYP (before the hiring freeze of course). So don't base your decision on jobs because you really will be able to get a job with both an NYU degree and UofR degree. I also have friends from Albany who didn't have any problem finding jobs either, of course jobs were more available upstate than in the city but they didn't have a problem because they didn't complete their program in the city.

In fact some of the nursing programs upstate are better than the ones in the city. As far as the tuition factor. A 20 grand difference is a pretty steep influence.
