Shout out to MN nurses!

U.S.A. Minnesota

Published

Hey, you all how are the nurses of MN doing? I'm new to this area but have posted on here a couple of times. I've noticed the MN forum is pretty quite? Just thought I'ld post this to encourage all the MN nurses to tell me about MN nursing, themselves, ande MN in general. Just moved up from TX and am loving the awesome fall. The cold kinda scares me but "I WILL SURVIVE". Still looking for a job but am keeping it positive. What do you all think about the union - good, bad, or ugly? Hope this stirs the need to type and tell me how the hell you all are doing out there. Take care and hope to hear from ya!:p

Hi there Mizz Texas. :) Welcome to our frigid state. Some areas will make you hate winter worse than others.

From what I have seen and heard, the union can be very very good, and very much needed in some places. It's not a state wide thing. What type of position are you looking for? I saw in another post that you're in Willmar. Not a lot of nursing jobs in the smaller areas, particularly no specialty positions. I am in the Cities and there are quite a few down here.

Welcome again!

Hello - great to hear from someone. Appreciate the welcome. SO. Spazzy nurse are you a part of a unionized hospital? What are the very good things? I'm not farmilar with the union thang. I'm a CVICU nurse - missing it terribly. There was not one RN position available when I first moved here - I was a little shocked. The hospital here does not do cardiovascular surgery. Thought about telemetry but there are no jobs. Then I found out about the rotating shifts and now hospitals are out of the question. Husband is on call and we have a little one. Do you all like rotating shifts? If had a union leader that would be the first thing I would change. Again I encourage MN nurses to make some noise - I want to have a better understanding of MN nursing. Have a great one! BURRRRRRRRRR it's cold!

Hi there--

Not all nurses at all hospitals are required to work rotating shifts. I know of a particular hospital/giant clinic (St. Mary's/Duluth Clinic) where the union has been a VERY good thing. Administration can be unbelievably crooked so it was a Godsend in that case. I don't work at a hospital so I give you my personal opinion of it. Are you dead set to work at a hospital? One of the reasons I chose not to do that was like you, my husband is on call, and we have a little one too. I love not working holidays and weekends. It's not the most challenging job in the world, but I still love it.

Would you be willing to drive to St. Cloud for work? I know it's a jaunt from Willmar, but they have a hospital there that does a fair amt. of CV. I husband is a cardiovascular technologist and had his clinicals at the hospital there. It's a good hospital.

Yep yep---- it is a cold one. Gonna get worse from what I hear, too. :stone

Hey ya - thought about St. Cloud seriously. Even went as far as to find daycare there. But them remembered it snows here - I hear allot - with ice and everything (just being silly). The road construction between here and there is mind numbing. I decided it was not a good idea. Thanks for the suggestion. What type of facility do you work at? I had a job break threw today. I have been interviewing for ortho/sports med clinical site manager and received the job today. Way different then what I have been doing but it has potential. Management always looks good on the ole resume. Hope the doc's rock. I miss my cardiovascular surgeons. Boo-hoo! Your right about no weekends and no holidays - who knew they existed working the hospital scene. We will see. Burrrrrrrrr it is really cold - snow flurries for fri night - I guess winter is here. So where to go and what to do in the cities? We go frequently but have a hard time finding anything other than MOA. Any tips or favorites? Take it easy.

Specializes in Geri, psych, TCU, neuro--AKA LTC.

Unfortunately in this area, it's hard to find RN positions unless you're willing to do LTC or Psych. My SIL is in LTC by default since she couldn't find an RN position anywhere.

I'm equal distance B/T St Cloud and Willmar and actually prefer psych, so hopefully I'll get in at the treatment center before they close down completely. I love psych and don't mind Geri, so I don't think I'll have a problem.

If you're looking for hospital nursing in Willmar, you only have one choice and I'm not sure I'd want to work there. The rotating shifts would bug the crap out of me. I prefer evenings and nights, not a morning person at all.

Best of luck in your job search!

Where are all the psych positions? I don't see many open.

Dear Ms. Texas! Thank you for your post. I too will be moving to MN in the next few months. Hope to be there by august. I too think the MN section has been a little quiet. I don't do hospital nursing anymore, but would be open to going back. I'm a case manager and will be living in big lake. Its somewhere between st. cloud and minneapolis i'm told. :) anyhow, if anyone has any suggestions for looking job hunting in these areas, please give me a shout!!!!!!!!!:p

Nice, Minne! You'll have both St. Cloud and the Cities to look for jobs then. There are actually quite a few people who commute from St. Cloud to the Cities every day, but you'll be right between the two so more opportunities for you. And living on a lake! Nice!! :)

Hi Spazzy!!!!!!!! Haven't chatted with you in a while. Thanks for posting. I'm not actually going to be living on a "lake". I'll be living in big lake township. I'm hoping that jobs will be a lot more accessible...I'm hoping your right (about having more opportunities). Anyhow, thanks for your comments this MN boad is always so quiet!!!!!!!!!!!:uhoh3: I wonder why?
