Hello All,

just wondering if any of you have had paid nursing students in the ICU and your thoughts on it. At the Unv. of TX SON theyhave a student care partner position where a second semester nursing student can work in their area of choice with an RN (like a preceptor) while in school. I start in a few weeks and will probley work at nights. Just wondering if they like mentoring students or is it more of a hassle for them?

thanx

I'm one of those paid nursing students. I work in the ICU as a Nurse Apprentice/Critical Care Tech. The nurses like having us around because they always have someone to help them. We also make sure the unit is stocked and organized and all the equipment is functioning properly. After I finish my second semester of nursing school, I will be able to move up to Nurse Apprentice II and do more patient care. I don't think we are a nuisance to our nurses and they seem to enjoy answering my many questions and there is one who will quiz me as she's giving meds or providing care ("Why am I doing this?", "Why am I giving this med?" etc.).
