Oakland University Accelerated program Fall 2012

U.S.A. Michigan

Hi everyone,

I wanted to know has anyone been accepted into OU accelerated nursing program for Fall 2012? I am so nervous for the decision, I can't wait for your responses :)

As for patho, if you join the FB group and post there, I will respond to you with a PM about my experience.

Ru guys done with pre-reqs ?? Have u heard anything about them ??

I'm completing pharm and patho this term. I'd be happy to send you a PM on FB with my thoughts. Just repost your question on the Fall 2012 cohort group page and I'll send you a message.

I think if you search FB for "Oakland University Nursing" you'll be able to find the group (since we're not allowed to have a direct link to the group on here).

Hi there. I am hoping to get accepted and would love to hear how it's going for you since you must be in full swing by now? Any advice would be appreciated. I am hoping for Winter 2013. Also, in regards to the final 3 prereques, do you recommend taking them in any order? Is it too much to take Pharm with the nutrition? I was thinking of taking only Patho this summer since it's accelerated. Thoughts? Thank you.

The Fall 2012 cohort doesn't have orientation until June and we don't start until the end of August, so there's not a lot to report just yet :clown:

As far as I know, nutrition is no longer a pre-req (though there may be places on the oakland.edu website that still have the old version of the course program). It has been replaced by informatics. As a new course, informatics is still evolving. When I took it, it was a relatively simple course with the group project taking up more time than any of the readings/exams.

Theoretically, pathophys should be taken before pharm (as it's pre-req for pharm, though SAIL doesn't catch this). As long as you did well in physiology, the pharm text has a pathophys review and I know several people who took the two out of order and did fine. (A few of my cohort bought (or borrowed) both the Lehne text and the Aschenbrenner text for pharm and the consensus seems to be that the Lehne book was better, though I can't really say WHY since I didn't see them to compare both.)

For both of those courses, the consensus seems to be that you learn a LOT more from from the on-campus course sections (that SAY they are for traditional BSN students, but really accelerated BSN students can take them). PLEASE double check with the adviser if you decide to "break the mold" and take the "traditional only" section to make sure they are still allowing accelerated students to do that. However, students also seem to feel that the online course is more convenient and it's bit easier to get a better grade.

That said, I think that pharmacology is a tough course to learn either way. There is just SO MUCH material and it's rote memorization for the most part. The way the online sections were set-up, it seemed like you didn't really need to memorize the info. However, I know that there will be more drugs included on (closed book) tests in the 12-month program, so I think it could be advantageous to memorize the drugs for on-campus pharm (at the risk of a lower grade) because then you will be better prepared for the program.

You have to decide if the potential for a lower grade in the on-campus class is worth the extra knowledge that closed book exams force you to learn. (For example, if you're already accepted to the program and you have two semesters before you start, maybe it makes more sense to take the on-campus course to try to learn as much as you can -- and if by some terrible luck, you fail, you can retake the online course the next term. BUT if you are waiting to get an acceptance letter, perhaps you don't want to risk having a lower grade on any re-application paperwork. It really varies by your specific situation.)

Creativetype, I'm assuming that if you're hoping for Winter 2013 that you mean starting in January 2013 and that you already had your interview. If that's correct, when did they say that they'll be mailing acceptance letters? You might want to start a FB group to try to find some classmates who may know people in other cohorts ahead of you. Alternately, for more detailed information, you may need to befriend some people in person via something like the student nurse association. I've found that it's unwise to post things on a message board like this where you publicly state that certain classes or professors are too easy, too hard or whatever other opinions you might have.

I was just wondering if anyone on this post that got in could tell me what the interview process was like and where your gpa was. I am going to apply at the end of summer. I have a goal statement wrote but am nervous about that too. Thanks for the help.

In talking to others, the interview seems to vary by who does your interview. All I did to prepare was search AllNurses (and the internet more generally) for nursing school interview questions. They're pretty similar to any other basic job interview questions such as why nursing? what skills/traits make a good nurse? Can you describe an example of when you have demonstrated these skills/traits in another area of your life? why this program? And so on. These are the types of questions I've answered at pretty much every interview I've ever done. Also, like job interviews, be prepared to ask a couple questions about the program. They have us do our interviews so far in advance, that I honestly don't remember the specific questions I was asked.

Once I had a list of common questions (never did find any specific to OU), I gave a little thought to what I might want to say in response to each question that I found. I tried not to overthink it, lest I end up panicking during the interview because I couldn't remember the "right" answer that I had concocted at home.

My undergrad GPA (from more than a decade ago) was so-so (3.0 to 3.5). My pre-req grades were much better.
