Being a male nurse?

Nurses Men

Published

My name is Josh and I am currently a high school grad, class of 2011. I am a volunteer firefighter and a construction worker. The Emergency Medicine career field and emergency service has always been a passion of mine. However during high school I got sucked into and stuck doing welding and fabrication at our technical school. I am now regretting that and am thinking of going to college to get at least an associates degree in nursing and fulfilling my goal of being either a paramedic or getting into being an ER nurse. Some people tell me its too late to do it, but I say it's never too late. And if it's not, how should i go about fulfilling this dream?

Any guidance or information would be greatly appreciated, thank you for your time...

I suggest that you start by deciding whether you want to be a nurse or a paramedic. Both are noble professions, but they are very different. Others have mentioned some of the differences, so I will not belabor that here.

I suggest that you visit a local hospital and find out whether they have a volunteer program. You might have to do some looking around, but try to find one, volunteer, and get a feel for what hospital life is like. Tell the nurses that you are considering entering the profession and want to help them do as much as they are willing to let you. They will love you for being eager to help, and you will gain a much clearer, more realistic view of nursing. In a little while, you will know which direction is right for you.

Best wishes, bro!

It's never too late indeed. After 11 successful years on Wall Street, I suddenly came to the realization that I wish to do something more meaningful which can only be obtained by helping others. I start my journey in pursing an education in nursing next month.

Best wishes to you! What an adventure you have ahead of you; make the most of every day of it.

I was also a welder before I decided to go to nursing school, and worked various other factory/labor jobs. I didn't decide I wanted to become a nurse until I was 23 and didn't start nursing school for a year after that. Now im a new RN and have been working as nurse's aide for 3 years. I think that its never too late, and I really think that my background in factory work has 1) showed me how much more rewarding it is to work with people and 2) it taught me my work ethic: just get the job done. I think it is an awesome profession and you should go for it with the attitude that no matter what happens you WILL be a nurse. And i have to say coming from a new nurse, the feeling of accomplishment that i feel, it was all worth it.
