"You should be a CRNA.....you are a man"

Nurses Men

Published

I've read a lot of things talking about how male nurses get the whole "why didn't you go to med school?" question regularly. Well within the nursing community I am seeing another question presented.

An instructor asked me about my plans after I finish my BSN, and I explained that I plan to get an advanced degree in the field at some point. She immediately suggested I go to CRNA school, pointing out that many men go into that specialty. Especially men with higher GPAs such as mine. Now that's fine and I know she was well meaning..but I am seeing a lot of assumptive attitudes that automatically think a man in nursing with a high GPA should be looking at CRNA school first...based on being a man! I dont want to be a CRNA, I want to be an NP! lol

Anyways - any of you other guys getting this?

I work in an andrology lab as a tech (probably going to the ACE at in the spring)...and I get that from the MDs after we chat a bit, "Why didnt you go to med school Dave?" Blah blah, dont get me wrong, I have no intentions of being bedside my whole career as a potential nurse, and like you want to specialize eventually, but yeah it gets a little old.

I agree with where you're coming from, but you can also take it as being a little flattering that she feels you're quality enough to suggest such a challenging route.

What type of NP are you shooting for?
