I got the job, now what??

I am beyond ecstatic! I graduated from nursing just over a year ago and struggled to find a med-surg job. In the intrem I had been working in psychiatric nursing but now I have finally landed a job on a med-surg unit.

I am so excited but my nerves are setting in. I start in 3 weeks and I'd like any words of wisdom, advice, helpful hints, etc.

It's been a year since I've been in school and I really feel like I could use a little refresher on a few things.

Just review wounds labs meds. I had to work rehab and corrections a few years after school and now in m/s. I love it

You will learn something new everyday. Just be yourself and remember be real with your patients...they appreciate honesty (being nice of coorifice), but they need someone to tell them what no one else will. Making the tough calls sometimes....they need it.

Congratulations! I just started on a med surg floor after about the same amount of time doing other things. Here is what I'm figuring out that I need to review, though it will be different for you, I'm sure ☺

Liver failure patho and associated labs

Renal patho and labs

GI/GU

Coagulopathies an labs (pt, inr, etc)

The skills will come back and you will get trained in those on the floor. The patho and labs are something that might or might not get covered. Assessments are also a good thing to review and practice.

Also, read up on diabetes again, especially on the different insulins.
