A 58 year old woman presents with type 2 Diabetus, a benign synthroid nodule, post menopausal, high blood pressure and past bypsss surgery. Her medications are Synthroid, Actos, Glocophage, Amaryl, Atenenol, Lipitor, Zetia, acuperil, Paxil, Centrum, aspirin therapy 325,g., fish oil omega3 , folic acid 400mg, Her Hb A1c is 7.2. Her hemoglobin is 11.7 RBC is 4.0 Hematocrit 34.6 and RDW is 15. Iron studies iron is 34, %of saturation is 9. What are these test results indicative of pertaining to her condition besides the obvious anemia? What further tests are indicated for the anemia besides an upper and lower GI endoscopy and colonoscopy? Her endicrinologist wants her on Byetta. She is VERY overweight and unable to lose weight through dieting or exercise. Her cadiologist told her to wait a year to make sure Byetta has no side effects. Patient is very confused. Any advice or experience with this would be helpful. thanks Krissy

Why do you think this woman is anemic with the HG & hct? Are you talking about her ferritin level when you say "iron is 34?" That is low for a ferritin.

Curious about Byetta. Going to look it up. Hope you get some good answers. I would like to know myself. Maybe I will make it as a diagnostician. Just kidding. Hope you get some of the very great information that you see on this board.

I didn't make the diagnosis. Her dr. did. Do you think he considered her anemic because the numbers were slightly lower than normal?
