I just got assigned in a general ward (I used to be in the Nursery and NICU for a year) and I wanna know how do you prepare esomeprazole 40mg/IV? How many mL of isotonic solution/ sterile water do you use?

Thanks a lot!

Not something I generally mix on the unit. It should come already mixed by pharmacy. If it doesnt find a IV medication book and it should tell you how much solution to mix to render a correct dosage.

Specializes in ER.

I've never personally given it, however from what I read...for the injection it is 5ml of NSS, over no less than 3 minutes, and for the infusion it was up to 100 ml (it did not give a minimum) over 10-30 minutes

Thanks for the information.

The esomeprazole/IV (Nexium) comes in a powder preparation, so you have to do the mixing before administering it to your patient. And we don't have an IV medication book here in the Philippines (err... I'm not sure). Although I did read the drug lit inside the box, there were no procedures on how to prepare it.

Thanks mommatrauma! So all I need is 5ml of NSS for the dilution. Cool. However I haven't had the chance to prepare the esomeprazole drip yet. Looking forward to it. :)
