MDS coordinator training

Looking for info on how to obtain MDS coordinator training for a beginner. I've been an RN since 1982 with varied experience but am interested in this field and don't know how to get started. Where do you get training? Did any of you obtain employment after training but with no prior MDS experience. I live in MN but am willing to travel. Thanks for any help!

There might be courses available, but the best way to learn MDS is to do it. If you are working in LTC already, offer to do some of the MDS assessments. Ask the MDS coordinator to train you. They are usually thrilled to have a nurse who wants to be involved in MDS.

If you are not already in LTC, MDS--and PPS, the Medicare side--is a pretty hard job to learn. You have to know long-term care and the regulations pretty well. Go for a nursing job in a facility and then get to know the MDS coordinator, and never venture too far away from the Briggs Manual.
