Mds

Well, I don't have all the answers yet - but will very soon.
I have been offered an MDS position, and have absolutely no experience in it what-so-ever. The LTC facility I will work for has a traveling RN/MDS person whom is going to give me a 'basic knowledge' of MDS paperwork, then there are companies that offer seminars & training for it.

Well where do I begin ??? Being a MDS has its ups and downs just as a nurse does. But it is a very stressful job and demanding you have very specific time frames as to when they need to be completed- 5 day/14 day/30/60/90 day and have to work closely with your therapy to obtain the best possible RUG score. The revenue your facility receives is based on what information you collect for the MDS. You have to be thorough and a very driven person to take this on. Every check mark you put on this paper you have to make sure you can back it up when a State person asks you about it or if you would be audited by Medicare. It is ever changing also- the new MDS 3.0 will be coming out and it looks to be another challenge. Don't get me wrong I love my job but there are times I would die to go back to the floor and work as a regular nurse.
