MedSurg jobs... anywhere on the Northshore

Hi guys, I'm a fairly new RN-BSN living and working on the Northshore in a Nursing home. Since graduation I have found that there are not many MedSurg positions listed in my area. Or for these, the postings will state "current acute care exp. required" or "ACLS required (which I don't have yet)."

Have you found this the case in your areas?

I am trying to ease out of Long-Term Care and thought MedSurg would be my best bet seeing that I'm still (in my eyes) a new grad. People, like my father, have told me about new grad programs for SICU at MGH but I can't relocate or commute that far at this point.

Any thoughts? Should I try NH?

It's like this everywhere right now unfortunately. I wouldn't even bother trying MGH since they usually fill up their new grad programs with internal applicants. NSMC hasn't had anything posted for nursing in awhile except for the ER. It's a tough time right now.

UMD, the recruiters from Beverly have said multiple times that they are only hiring per diem external candidates with 2-3 years of experience due to budget constraints. The recruiter also said for the first time ever they are not going to have enough positions to hire their own internal clinical associates. There may always be a need for RNs on the floor but the budget dictates what actually happens, and right now, there isn't enough budget to fill the positions.

I am so surprised at this turn of events. I guess that nurses are staying in their jobs. What happens next year when the baby boomer generation starts to retire or even this year? Will they stay in their jobs @ age 65 just because of the economy? Have you tried Union Hosp. in Lynn? With your Geri experience you could get Geri psych. I believe they have jobs posted. You will probably have to work nights where ever you go if hiring is a problem. You could try a smaller place like Kindred in Peabody. Don't stop. You will get hired. Just be persistant. And, you are in a better position then say someone with over 20 years experience like myself as they don't want nurses with that many years because they get top dollar and new grads or those with less then 5 years don't make as much $$. Still comes down to the almighty dollar.

I am looking for a Med/surg position too. I have only LTC exp. (6 years), but still noone wants to hire me without acute care. Tough times indeed.
