Student nurse at University of maryland shock trauma centrt

U.S.A. Maryland

Does anybody know the hiring manager for the Cowley STC ? I am very interested in a student nurse position there that they currently have posted .

There is no specific HR department for STC. The UMMC HR manages everything, because STC is just a part of it.

As for who you would speak with, I'm not sure. I would start with HR; not all STC units probably have SN, so asking a nurse manager wouldn't be the way I'd go.

Their entire HR system is completely online, so you may have some difficulty.

By the way, I worked there for several years.

Can you tell me the type of path you took to start there ? How is the culture there ?

Full disclosure: I'm currently and Occupational Therapist, and worked at UMMC/STC for several years, as well as other hospitals in the Baltimore area. I also just got accepted to an ABSN program (!), and am switching gears.

UMMC was my first job. I literally just applied.

STC has a culture all its own. The individual units are quite tight; many nurses/techs go out together on their own time to eat/bars/games. There is definitely a "we're all in this together" mentality, which extends all the way to getting patients out of bed for a 6 person lift or bed rolling for procedures. (of course, there are tough times, busy times, worse times, better times, etc).

The hardest part is that STC is mainly ruled by surgeons. And people tend to have other problems too, besides being hit by a bus. So, a person's HTN may be waaayy out of control, but getting it addressed can be difficult. And if a person is showing stroke symptoms, forget about it. You gotta strip naked and scream.

They are doing some hard work over the past few years to change this, but it's hard to change the direction of a barge quickly.
