New Aide with No Common Sense!

I am the Director at an Adult Daycare and just hired a CNA 2 months ago. She is having difficulties catching on and just doesn't seem to have any common sense whatsoever. For instance, I have trained her several times how to transfer an 80 pound girl (using 2-assist) and she almost dropped the Client today! Then when she passes meds she will actually interrupt the Client and bring the pills into the restroom while they are on the toilet. She even forgot a Client in the restroom and told them not to say anything. I could go on and on...but I just don't see her improving no matter how much training I give her.

The other aides are refusing to transfer with her since they are hurting their backs and carrying all the weight. But I don't think it's fair she is not performing her job duties.

Should I give her 30 days to improve her skills or put her on a probation period? I'm getting very discouraged!

I'm not sure what your policy is on probation periods, but it sounds like you've tried training this employee more than once. Transfers would be a big concern for me. You also need to consider your other employees. Is it worth someone getting hurt during a transfer or losing good employees who might quit because of frustration, just to keep this one. I'd probably have to let her go if I didn't see a big improvement soon! Sometimes you don't need a probation period to know if someone just isn't working out.

She should still be in the probationary period, you've tried and like the PP stated...sometimes it just isn't going to work out.

I think 2 months is enough time to catch on to the work and learn to get along with others. If she were just slow-paced- I would say give her more time, but with these problems already under her belt despite your instructions, I would look to replace her with someone more appropriate. Each of your staff has to represent the kind of facility you want to run. If she cant remember what you have taught her and has gone so far as to lie and ask others to lie for her, that is an indication that she doesn't represent the values you stand for. Giving her 30 days is more than enough. This job is not cut out for just anyone.

I had similar situation and we ended up helping him find a less demanding but similar job elsewhere.

It is never easy after putting your heart and soul in training staff to cut your losses and decide that this just isn;t working but your time and energies are very valuable.
