WIA funds for LPN program

Aspiring2bgreat- Sorry to hear that. I hope the withdrawl of WIA funds is not a national trend. Where are you located? I am in CA and have a appointment with my case worker from the EDD office tomorrow morning. I pray that I don't hear the same news. One person told me that I picked the right field (LVN) to get WIA funds for because the field is in demand and that there is a projected growth or need for LVN's over the next few years.

My advice to you is to talk to someone else. I have found that in talking to some people, they are not as informed as they should be. Don't let that one person be the final say. Please talk to someone else.

I have to same plan as you...go the LVN school, finish taking my prerequesites and then go to a bridge to RN program.

hello and thanks for responding,

yeah it just kinda some up what all the talk is about with the lpn market. i am in s. florida where the job market and pay is poor in comparison to other states. you may not have to worry about this, because i heard your state is booming in this area. this is what i was told by the agency, the market is saturated and the need by 2014 won't be available. so they prefer to pay for trades that are marketable and in demand.

i know there will probably always be jobs in nursing or rehab homes, but i don't think there will be much variety other than that, maybe. but, my decision still remains the same because i think it is the best option for me. i will do the lpn, i recently took cna and i want to work p/t to get a bit of experience. the competiton and available slots for rn program is crazy and i don't have many more years to wait around on getting into that program. i feel by taking the lpn first, i will be successful when doing the rn (hardest part down).

i hope everything works out for you. we can't allow every obstacle that comes our way to disrupt our plan, but we can't be blind about the obivious either.

Well I just had my interview with the case worker and what she said was dismal, discouraging and stupid. She said that she did not think that I could do the program or that I could not get a job as a LVN. She said that the training was too long and too expensive and that the most I could get is $7000. Then she turned around and said that the LVN field is an excellent field to get into. Then she turned around again and asked who told me to submit all the bids that I submitted and I told her that a staff member told me to so. Her response was, "Well, you certainly did your homework." I had submitted all of the proper paperwork. She also said that they only pay for 3 weeks to 6 months of training. Every comment she made contradicted a previous comment. She said that they would pay for CNA training. I explained to her that I had my CNA/HHA licenses before but because I could not find employment, I let it expired. Silly woman tried to tell me that she does the same thing and did not need a license only a background check and fingerprinting. She also sai that she did not think I could get ajob as a LVN due to not having any experience in the medical field. I had to repeat the fact that that used to have my CNA/HHA licenses and that Iwas my mother's caregiver for a number of years. Excuse me, isn't that what training is all about? Silly.me but I thought that was reason was why I was there...to get proper training in a employable field so that I can get back out into the workforce again.Sorrry for long post. I have since called back to that worksource center and I advise you to do the same.

Well, I didn't even need to be in that meeting to know you have to speak to someone who knows what they are talkin about. Because, it definately isn't her. People try to discourage you also, like the money is coming out of there pockets. She sounds very unprofessional.

The program here paid up to $6k, only to certain approved schools, and there isn't a time frame. She did mention the finding a job thing but fom all the inconsistencies she may not even know what she talking about.

I'll give you the advise you gave me talk to someone else but don't allow what she said to effect you.

Yes, she did ask if I was looking for a job (any), and I told her that I was but that I really wanted to go attend school.

I left a message for a supervisor to call me back earlier today and did not hear from them. But don't you worry, I will call again tomorrow morning.

What people (some) don't realize is ... if it wasn't for people like you and I , there would not be a need for people like her or the person you spoke to. Some folks just don't get it.

I know exactly what you all are going through. My casework put me through hell. She kept telling me different things everytime we spoke, most caseworkers have a "God-like" syndrome, they know they have peoples future in their hands, they want you to kiss their ass, and they have access to so much money they think its coming out of there bank accounts.Dont be discouraged, they cant just flat deny you. I live in Ohio and they have meetings every week, your caseworker presents your case, then they take a vote on if your a good canidate or not. Thank God! I was approved for $12,000 of my $14,000 tuition. There will always be LPN jobs, nursing homes would rather pay LPNs than RNs, well here they do. Just do everything u have to do on your part.

Thank you for replying. Earlier today I heard from the case worker from worksource center and she apologized for the conversation we had the other day. Before the apology, I had mentioned that the person that I had spoken to (the previous day) was unprofessional and condensending. Imagine the look on my face when the the lady said, "It was me who you talked to the other day." She stated that she is not normally that way. I had to pick my face off the floor. Then I thought to myself, I did not lie. She was truly unprofessional and condensending in the way she had spoken to me. Anyway, she mentioned that she had spoken to her manager about me after I had left (translation: she was trying to cover her butt due to the fact that word got out that I had called to make a complaint against her) and said that she wanted to have a meeting with her manager and I to discuss this in more detail and to see what , if anything, could be done sometime next week. Please believe, I plan on getting a few things off my chest that day. She claimed that she said the things that she had said, because she did not want to get my hopes up too high.

Wow, so she is well aware that she was rude and not helpful. Well, just stand your ground but don't be to defensive. Make your main issue be that you just would like to recieve help to enter the program.

Hi Aspiring2bgreat,

Well, over a week had passed and I still had not heard back from the case worker as she promised. I called a case worker at another work source center just to get some advice about what I should do about this situation. She told me that I should look through my paperwork and find the name of the person I would contact to file a formal complaint. I found the name and contact info of the compliance officer for the city and called her. She , in turn, contacted the V.P. of Corporate Affairs out of the worksource center. The V.P. called me the next day and requested a meeting with me , so we met the following day. He said that he was very disturbed of two words in my initial report which were "rude" and "condescending". We discussed the orientation, my meeting with the case worker, my background and what services I was seeking.

The V.P. was very impressed with my work history and the thoughness of my file. Nothing was missing. Getting back to ol' girl... she lied on the facilitator of the orientation, on me, and her boss -the V.P. (on paper)! On paper, she was judge, jury and the executioner and said that she did not believe that I could do the program. On paper, she said that she mentioned her boss by name and that we were going to have a meeting. On paper, she lied and said that the orientation facilitator said that there were no funds. On paper, she said that she notified her boss about me, but did not. On paper, she said that I could not get a job in the healthcare industry because I did not have the experience, but in my file , it clearly states that I was there to recieve funds for training in the healthcare industry... in multiple places.

The V.P. asked me questions about what it is like for a LVN. He could tell that I have done my research. He looked through my file and said that it was complete , so therefore; I was eligible for WIA funds. The not-so-great-news is that I need to get into a program offered by a community college or a ROP, because they are cheaper. That is the hard part, getting a high enough score to be in the top 60 slots. Sigh. But at least I now have the funds.

Before the V.P. and I finished , he made sure that I got a swipe card and he let me know that I would never have to deal with that case worker again , he will personally handle my case.

Wow, now that's crazy! I believe that worker was on the fence anyway for being on her way out the door and sadly she only help herself. For it to go as high as the VP, that had to be the case.

Well the good thing that came out of this is someone in that office has learned. Learn not be judgemental, lazy, and to at least attempt to do the job you are put there to do, help people. Also, you will be getting your funds.

You have encouraged me to try again, maybe another office. The hard part is done for you, once you know you have the funds you will do everything to make sure you score high enough.
