It's that time of year again

The Kansas Highway Patrol is warning drivers to watch out for deer.

Laurie Riley knows that all too well. While driving along a Leavenworth County road Saturday, Riley hit one.

"We came up over the hill and there were three of them," Riley said. "One went one way, the other went another way and one started to go left, but turned right and I hit the middle of his body, which hit the front end and the side above the wheel."

Riley and her passenger were not hurt.

"It was really scary ... really scary," Riley said.

Last year, more than 9,000 deer-vehicle crashes were reported in Kansas, KMBC's Brenda Washington said.

Washington said that deer cause more accidents at this time of year because it is mating season.

"They're going on pure instinct and they don't care about cars," Kansas Highway Patrol Trooper Howard Dickinson said.

Dickinson said that it is not only the rural areas that are seeing problems.

"We've had them at I-35 and Mission Road. We have them just about everywhere. We had one hit just this morning at 95th Street and I-35," Dickinson said.

It's that time of year again everyone.
