Well JKDT,

Both of the solutions that you referenced are hypertonic, So ideally infuse them into the largest vessel possible.

D5LR not only provides electrolytes, but also dextrose for calories.

Therefore, careful use with pt's with renal ( Potassium in this fluid) or cardiac problems secondary to fluid overload problems ( These solutions will draw from cellular and interstitial spaces into the blood vessel - ICF to ECF)

The dextrose content in both of these solutions may be contraindicated for diabetics.

The solution D51/2 NS contains only a small amt of sodium and no other electrolytes so prolonged use can be a problem for some patients.

Hope this helps
