On Call dilemma

How does other agencies do your oncall? We cover a 6 county area & have someone triage all the after hour calls, so the field nurses do not have to take time to answer each call. We have LPN's who are scheduled with PM visits, but the RN's may have an IV follow up visit in the PM, then an admit to do and answer the Prn calls (leaking caths, wound vac problems, IV problem) that requires a home visit. It can make for a long night at times..... :crying2:

I was wondering how other offices do their oncall and how often you are oncall? Does your agency tweak your schedule to account for the upcoming oncall? All the nurses complain about the oncall, but sometimes it helps to see how others have it. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated...

Thanks!

Our on call system is very similar to this except on the weekends our RNs take first call and the LPNs take backup. This is because we do so many weekend admissions and PHEs. Our field nurses take call, office nurses do not. We do get a day off during the week if our weekend is coming up but the day we get is decided by the DON, depending on workload. On call pay is the pits. We get $15 for weeknights and $75 for weekends. LPNs do not get extra. Of course we get paid for the time that we spend on visits, phone calls, etc. Our fulltime employees are paid hourly and the prn can choose from hourly or per visit.

Well, you're not so bad off.. we get paid less than that for w/e call and weeknights. We do things pretty much the same way as you described, but we don't get a weekday off when we have w/e call.

I would like to see that happen. Two weeks in a row is a bit much. :stone
