Med Observation

What's your technique:

You have patient Mary Doe, you visit her once per week. You don't set up her meds, BUT you do have to observe them to make sure she is setting them up correctly. SHe sets up a weeks worth at a time.

How would you check these meds....and let's say she takes 10 in the a.m. 4 at noon and 6 at h.s.

I think it's much easier to have the nurse set them up, but if the pt does them, you have to figure out what someone else has done. WHat do you do?

medicare doesn't consider setting up meds a skill so if the nurse continues to set them up with the weekly visit you are stuck when it comes time for discharge,,,teaching the patient and/or a caregiver is the way to go...also having someone in charge of setting them up does not "lock" you into a specific day of the week to visit...you will find as you get to know your patient you can look at that med box and know if is right or wrong.
