Passing Fundamentals HESI

Nursing Students HESI

Published

Hey everyone! I just finished my first semester of Nursing school and thankfully passed my fundamentals HESI exam with a 949. The rest of my class did poorly, so I thought I would post a few tips on how I prepared myself.

I had my Nursing Fundamentals exam the day before my HESI, so that probably helped me a lot with the actual material, but other than that I did not go over material prior to the HESI. My class was required to do 2 practice quizzes on evolve and I also went ahead and did the 2 practice tests. However, I really did not like practicing on evolve because once you finished one exam, you had the answers for the quizzes and it would not give you any new questions. Despite this, I went to google and just looked up NCLEX testing strategies and then I used those strategies to help me understand why I missed the questions on evolve. I definitely recommend reviewing why you got the wrong answer on evolve because I honestly believe that helped me more than anything.

I also had to get myself in the mindset that the HESI questions are almost always looking for what comes first or what is most important, even if it does not directly say it in the question. Remember the ABC's: airway, breathing, circulation and Maslow's priorities. If they cannot breathe, that is your first priority.

Read the question thoroughly, consider each answer and select two. If you get it down to two answers, then at least you have a 50% shot and sometimes that helps to ease the stress.

Yes, reviewing the material is important, but learning to select the right answer will get you through it.

Above all, don't forget to take a deep breath and just relax! You know this material, just have to learn how to take the test!

Congrats on taking the first step towards getting your degree in nursing. =)
