Applying to UH Manoa & Kapiolani Nursing Programs

U.S.A. Hawaii

So I was just wondering, are students who take higher level classes better considered to be accepted to UHM & KCC's nursing programs? I took MATH 241 and got a B+. Is that better than those who take a lower level math and get an A? I also took CHEM 161 and got a B. Will I have a better chance of getting accepted than those who took a lower level of a physical science, like, say, Geography 100?

Taking all my highest grades for my pre-reqs necessary to get in the nursing program, I have an A in human pays, and A- in my lab, a B in chemistry 161 (physical science req), a B+ in math 241, and hopefully an A in family resources (ds course) which adds up to about a 3.5 GPA... I know most people accepted have straight A's... But will my higher level classes look better compared to someone who has a 4.0/3.9 in lower levels?! I'm really worried because I really want to get in because I'm applying this in September!

Thanks for the help!

Hey! I don't think it matters if you have a higher level class. I think that just as long it's a college level class, then it's okay. Because on the app, it only asks for grades of a "C" or higher and the minimum GPA that you need.

Hi

having a higher level class in anything does not matter to them. What counts is your GPA and TEAS score or NLN( for UH). As long as those higher level classes satisfy the pre-reqs for the program they take that grade and base your GPA on that. If you have more than one class in a classification they take your highest grade to fulfill that requirement.

Goodluck in applying!

Kcc is is tough to get into. UH is much more easier.

Hi ellers, have you applied to any of the programs yet? Kcc or UH...

Yes, I applied to KCC last semester and was put on the alternate list. And I applied to KCC again and UH for this coming fall, alternate again for KCC but I was accepted into UH Manoa.

do have other classes to replace your math 241? Like math 100? If you have an A in that you could use that grade instead of your B in Math241

Ohh i see. & oops, wrong person. It was @marenneg who askd bout that lol. But if you don't mind me asking, what was your stats like before you submitted your app for kcc?

I don't have any other math classes... I guess I'll retake another FS course and DP -_- Thank you though!

What do you think my chances are in getting accepted with a 3.6 pre-req GPA and 3.4 cum gpa? I still have to take my TEAS test though...

my gpa for kcc was 3.75 with 80% on teas. And for Uh gpa was 4.0 with 80% teas and around 130 nln.

Hi Maranneg,

its hard to say what your chances are especially without a TEAS score. But like I said in my previous reply to Bpacis I had a 3.75 and 80% for TEAS and was put on Alt list for KCC. With uh i had 4.0 gpa since they take the best grades you have for each classification. I wasn't sure scores were better so I submitted both my TEAS and NLN scores.

For some reason KCC has only been accepting 18 students compared to the usual 30 they accept. You could also talk with an adviser at KCC they can tell you more of how to raise yours chances of getting in. If you Math 241 satisfies that requirement I would not suggest taking it especially if you score in the 90's on your TEAS. So you might want to take your TEAS first and then talk to an adviser about retaking classes.

Wow! Did you take any health experience also or no?

No I didn't. I was going to go for my CNA if I didn't get in for fall but glad I didn't have too. :)
