I am seriously considering the AF. I have talked to the recruiter several times. My question is how long does it take for the whole process from start to finish? The recruiter keeps saying "in your senior year". So I was just wondering how long to expect to know if I have been accepted...

I don't know about nursing students, but after you send your package to the board it usually takes 2-4wks. The board usually meets atleast once a month to determine if you are qualified for a nursing commission. This may have changed. The whole process from start to finish usually takes 3-6 months.

Hello Duncan,

In regards to my Army application experience I agree with wtbcrna that once your packet goes before the board it will be within a month.

I started to work on my packet at the end of July. My packet went before the October board, (I found out in one day that there were errors in the application and the board rejected it immediately).

My recruiter didn't allow me to fix all the errors, (such as redo the statement to fix that it was not for the student nurse program) and he modified it a bit and sent it before the November board.

I heard nothing for nearly a month until I got word that it was rejected for no reason.

My recruiter didn't let me fix it still, like I wanted to, and he sent it before the December board and I found out before Christmas that it was picked up and they had me come in to sign and oath.

Now...those pesky problems on my contract are still in need of being fixed, (I will not go until they are fixed...sigh...) and I would like to suggest that if there is anything that you want clarified, fixed, or ammended, to do it before your packet goes in. :)

Gen-maybe releasing from Army if it isn't fixed and trying AF!

You thinking of releasing from the Army contract to go AF?

Yea if your packet is messed up and can't be fixed you probably can get release and terminate your contract. I had 2 contracts when I enlisted in 2000, I changed the first one for a better one before I shipped out. Also, I had a friend that did that when I was in AIT (I was enlisted). They released her from her contract because they could not live up to something that was in her contract (I think it was from prior loan repayment). I think for officer's its the same.

Hello,

Yes, I am thinking of doing this. I sent my signed statement asking for a release but was told not to do it until I pass NCLEX. I figure to wait a bit cannot hurt but, I am waiting for my SF 86, (the form with ten years worth of jobs, schools, residences and people who knew me at each place) as the AF recruiter suggested.

IF they would let me change my contract, (as you did) then I would be good with that.

How did you arrange to have your contract changed??!! This is what I need to know. I have been trying to get it changed since before signing and my recruiter insisted that it could be changed later but...he is little help and it is due to my lack of faith in the ability that I am requesting the release mostly.

I am looking forward to hearing how you changed your contract before you shipped!

You can cancel EVERYTHING before you get sent off to OBC/OCS or wherever you are going. If you are having a hard time with your recruiter ask to speak to the recruit commander(even though you are not military yet its still important to go up the chain) they do not like seeing people go and usually try to do everything in their power to keep u. If this does not work ask to be let out your contract (you will NOT get blacklisted if someone tells you this they are LYING!). They CAN NOT force you to go especially since you are not even an RN or even in the Army yet.

I was 17 when I enlisted and even at that age I knew my first contract was not reliable. So I said I no longer wanted to join. I then 2 months later went to a better recruiter and enrolled in the DEP program and the second contract I got to choose my duty station and went in for 3 yrs instead of 4yrs and received higher enlistment and college money then my first contract.

If you feel something is up or fishy you know more than anyone else can tell you. Go by your instinct you do NOT want to regret a career choice. If you feel that your recruiter is not doing everything in his power for you choose another one. You would not by a car from a cars salesman that couldn't get you the car you wanted at the rate you wanted. Why settle for a Kia when you can get an Acura. Think of it that way. Some things are possible especially in the Army trust me I did it. At MEPS they can negotiate A LOT of things especially. Unless its in a policy or in writing that they can't do it then believe them but if its not then they CAN do something about it.

Thank you Cherish,

I had overlooked that I had spoke with his "supervisor" but, the guy didn't say "recruiting commander".

I really want to stay in but, to change my contract.

You have given me encouragement, thank you.

Hello,

I sent the email requestin to change my contract completely and got a reply.

I was told that it is not possible and that I would have to release.

Okay then, looks like that is out of my hands.
