Anyone worked at TRIPLER AMC?? Or heard anything about it?

I am a new grad waiting to go to the July 09 OBLC class. I received my first duty assignment- Tripler Army Med Center. This was my first choice (very excited!!:yeah:). Just wondering if anyone has worked there, what they could tell me about their experiences (good and bad), and basically anything about life on Oahu. I am from New England, so this is going to be different for sure! Also, what's the Army life like after OBLC and in Oahu? And lastly, where are some good areas to live? I've heard that traffic is a nightmare around Honolulu. I'd like to be as close to the beach as possible, but don't want to deal with the traffic!!

congrats to you! i know you must be super excited! I'm not in yet and will graduate nursing school next May, so I'll be in the same boat as you if everything goes well! Question for you: When do you list your top 3 locations and when do they let you know?

I told my recruiter my top 3 when I was going through the application process but it never really came into play until the Major who handles new LT's called me to give me my orders. She then asked me where I wanted to go. I told her Hawaii and she said "we can do that for you". This was about a month ago, and I got commissioned in late January.

PM me your contact info and we can get together at OBC in July. We've been in HI for 6 years so I'll give you some guidance about where to live, where not to live, etc. :) I also did several rotations at TAMC- Pediatric clinic, Med-Surg, ER, ICU, PCU, OR, NICU. I loved it and was very impressed.

congrats to you! i know you must be super excited! I'm not in yet and will graduate nursing school next May, so I'll be in the same boat as you if everything goes well! Question for you: When do you list your top 3 locations and when do they let you know?

I got to rank my choices from 1 through 9 (there are 9 locations to choose from for your first year in nursing) in the spring of my junior year. I found out where I am going in December of my senior year (Hawaii here I come!!) hope that helps!

I thought it was 8 choices but they are all of the major Army Med Centers- Walter Reed (in D.C.), Womack (Ft. Bragg, NC), Eisenhower (Ft. Gordon, GA), Brooke (San Antonio), Tripler (Oahu), Madigan (Ft. Lewis, WA), Landstuhl (Germany), Beaumont (Ft Bliss, Tx). Maybe Ft Hood, Tx is one, but I didn't think it was considered an AMC.

I started the application/hiring process as a Civilian RN at Tripler Army Medical Center. I cant tell you much about being in the military except that I am military spouse. So I am not sure how it cuz I have not started on the floor yet. I dont know when I will start since the hiring process takes 1 to 2 months.

Are for as places to live, I can help since I am born and raised on Oahu. You may have base housing near Tripler in the Moanalua or Salt Lake. If you choose to live off base, housing is expensive, not very pet friendly and rent/utlities/gas for driving is not cheap! If you need to live farther from the hospital, Aiea is a beautiful place to live in but very very expensive. It is close to a shopping mall with lots of places to go eat and hang out. No beach, but there is hiking and parks.

have you actually lived on base there? Initially I was thinking of living off base, simply because the housing allowance would cover rent in a decent apartment. Do you have any advice on base living vs. off base? thanks!
