2011 Air Force Nurse Enlisted Commissioning Program (NECP) Applicants

Hi All~

There was a thread for last year's NECP applicants but I thought I would start one for 2011. Anyone out there applying to the Air Force's AY 2011 Nurse Enlisted Commissioning Program? We have a page on Facebook as well, but I wanted to see if there was anyone else on here as well....

I was a 2010 NECP select but didn't get in to either nursing school that I applied to. That was the worst thing in the world (having to decline my NECP seat). One school had me calculated at a 3.66 GPA (they didn't accept a lot of my classes) and the other had me at a 3.70. In both cases, it wasn't a high enough GPA (the cutoffs were 3.74 and 3.77). I have taken more classes since and have brought my GPA to a 3.74 currently (still have two classes to finish up, but they aren't NECP prereq's); if I get an A in both (which I think I will), it will only bring me to a 3.76 (I have 86 credits currently so each A only brings up my GPA 1/100 of a point but a B can drop me 1/10 of a point). I have been accepted to Univ. of Missouri, St. Louis already and have applied to five other schools: Univ of South Florida, Univ of Central Florida, Univ of FL, Florida State U, and Univ of Maryland. I don't want to end up in the same boat that I was in last year with an NECP seat and no school so I decided to apply to a few schools.

Anyhoo, hopefully there are some more 2011 NECP hopefuls here. Last year it was really nice to have others to talk to who were in the same boat. :)

Hi and welcome! I took Human Nutrition; I guess it will depend on whether the school you are applying to will accept it. If they will, it should be fine. You can also try to email Mr. B to ask. Good luck! :)

Krisin,

If there's any question the best thing to do is send a copy of the class syllabus to the schools you are applying to and they will let you know if it fulfills there nutrition requirement. Mr. Baker will accept it as long as your school accepts it.

I haven't heard anything about EPRs...how heavily are they weighed?

Hi! I think there was another applicant who was accepted last year who had five's but they weren't firewall. I have firewall for my last five and I was accepted. I can't recall anyone else sharing their EPR info, but if you go back into the NECP thread from last year and go over it you may find something in there. They do look at the whole person concept, I know that, and I know that the Chief Nurse Interview counts for a lot, as well as the letter of recommendation. Good luck! :)

Hello everyone! I am applying for NECP in 2012. I have been researching many schools. I contacted Univ of Missouri St. Louis and they stated that they were changing their curriculumn January 2012, and that it would now be a 2 1/2 year program. It's so hard finding schools to apply to!

I already had my AA before joining the AF. I am currently enrolled in Chemistry Lab online, and I don't plan to take Chemistry II with the lab. I have a 3.5 GPA. Where did most of you get the package checklist to begin crating your package? When I finish my class in June I plan to study for my TEAS test which I have bought the study guide for, and then start applying to nursing schools. And additional information would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.

Hi! Have you seen the NECP Guidelines? They have a checklist as well as in-depth explanations of what you need. I can either send them to you at home or at work if you don't have them. You can PM me or respond to this thread if you like and I will send them to you. Definitely a good idea to take the TEAS. We have a FB site as well; I think it is under USAF NECP. I can send the guidelines to you on there as well. Good luck in 2012! :)

I have not received the guidlines. Whatever you can send me would be great! you can send it to my work or home [email protected] or [email protected]. Thank you so much I really appreciate it.

Hi, a couple of you have referred to UMSL. I had read somewhere else that they were pretty military friendly. However, when I called them there was no mention of them saving spots for AD military. Also they said that a competitive GPA was 3.5 or higher and that they wanted a science GPA even higher than that! Now I KNOW many applicants have a GPA this high and applicants are even turned away with GPA's above 3.8.... but this is not me! After a busy career, I am accepting of the fact that I have finished a previous bachelors degree with a GPA around 3.2. I have been scouring dozens of colleges to find a few that are open to a mid-level GPA and that are military friendly... well there aren't many!! Any advice? Am I talking to the wrong person at UMSL? Any other colleges that I should be checking into? Would love to hear from someone... anyone :)

Hi! Well I do have some bad news. While UMSL is mil-friendly, they will no longer qualify for NECP after this year as they are switching to a 2.5-year program (which is not allowable for NECP, has to be two years tops). But the good news is since you already have a bachelor's degree, you can look into 2nd degree BSN programs as opposed to undergrad traditional BSN programs. They typically admit students with lower GPAs. I know that a school that I applied to last year admitted 2nd degree students with around a 3.4 GPA while the undergrad (non-bachelor's-degree holding) program's cutoff was a 3.77. Also UMSL does not hold slots for any other program except traditional undergrad; you may not qualify for that if you already have a degree (some schools will not let you apply to their undergrad program if you have a bachelor's; you have to apply to their 2nd degree program). Try University of Maryland, Baltimore. Very nice and very mil-friendly (that is where I will be going if accepted to NECP this year). You will need to take the TEAS to apply, but it is worth it. Also try University of Central Florida. They have MECP (the Navy's version of NECP). You need the TEAS for them as well. I am speaking from the point of view from a traditional BSN applicant (no bachelor's degree yet). Things may be different for you, but I would try those to start. Good luck, and please don't hesitate to ask if you have questions! :)

Thanks for your reply! I apologize, but I should have mentioned I am applying for MECP. I know that NECP is a little different, but pretty close and I think we are certainly all after the same goal of a BSN :)

I already tried Maryland and UCF... UCF was actually top on my 'dream' list, but GPA just isn't high enough. Done deal. But I can't change that now, I took a lot of those courses over ten years ago when I had three little ones under five, a spouse in school full-time and on AD... just the way it is. Also ten years ago is WHEN I took all of those prereq classes that are SO important to nursing school NOW... ugh! Some schools I am out just because I took my prereqs so long ago. I am retaking a couple of them now just to brush up and get a better grade. Unfortunately, I am paying for mistakes that I made over ten years ago, but hopefully if it's meant to be it will work out.

I am surprised that you have received a different welcome from UMSL than I did. Maybe it's because your GPA was higher? I don't care whether I have to go traditional or second degree, I would just like to get in somewhere so I have a shot at MECP this year. I am always open to ideas or opinions, this site is where I have received most of my information and I am grateful!

Thanks Kynchanted

Also I would recommend googling "military friendly colleges" it brings up a list of schools that you might be eligible to apply to.

Hi! Sorry for the LATE response. When I contacted UMSL, it was because I posted what had happened last year on our FB site (me getting accepted to NECP but getting waitlisted then denied admission to the schools I applied to). Another NECP applicant who had gained admission to multiple schools (one of them being UMSL's guaranteed mil slots) tried to give me her UMSL slot and told me to contact them. So I asked them straight out if we could switch spots since I was AD mil as well and she was declining her spot. They don't advertise their guaranteed slots; I had to ask about it. They said that they couldn't do that last year, but that I could have a guaranteed slot for this year, which I took. My advice to you is to take more gen ed classes and get your GPA higher (that is what I did since a 3.7 wasn't high enough to get me in to school last year). Take the prereqs again too; some schools will look at your most recent grade if the class is a repeat. Also, I know it sounds bad, but try to look at schools that have less of an applicant pool, i.e. if you are applying to schools in FL, NY, and CA (areas where everyone wants to live), the applicant pool becomes a lot more competitive. I can't remember if I already said all of this or not (I haven't reviewed my last posts before I wrote this), but look at schools that require placement tests too (TEAS, HESI, etc.). Those also decrease the applicant pools since they require more work to apply as opposed to a simple app and a fee. I really think that second-degree programs will be your best bet, and most schools have them. I really wish you the best of luck. I know that the NECP results will be released in about three days; if I am not selected I don't know what I will do, especially since I was selected last year and didn't get to go. I really wish that everyone who wanted to pursue nursing for the right reasons (not just to be an officer) was accepted. Best of luck! :)
