Hi All~

There was a thread for last year's NECP applicants but I thought I would start one for 2011. Anyone out there applying to the Air Force's AY 2011 Nurse Enlisted Commissioning Program? We have a page on Facebook as well, but I wanted to see if there was anyone else on here as well....

I was a 2010 NECP select but didn't get in to either nursing school that I applied to. That was the worst thing in the world (having to decline my NECP seat). One school had me calculated at a 3.66 GPA (they didn't accept a lot of my classes) and the other had me at a 3.70. In both cases, it wasn't a high enough GPA (the cutoffs were 3.74 and 3.77). I have taken more classes since and have brought my GPA to a 3.74 currently (still have two classes to finish up, but they aren't NECP prereq's); if I get an A in both (which I think I will), it will only bring me to a 3.76 (I have 86 credits currently so each A only brings up my GPA 1/100 of a point but a B can drop me 1/10 of a point). I have been accepted to Univ. of Missouri, St. Louis already and have applied to five other schools: Univ of South Florida, Univ of Central Florida, Univ of FL, Florida State U, and Univ of Maryland. I don't want to end up in the same boat that I was in last year with an NECP seat and no school so I decided to apply to a few schools.

Anyhoo, hopefully there are some more 2011 NECP hopefuls here. Last year it was really nice to have others to talk to who were in the same boat. :)

Where did your friend worked at in Aviano??? I loved it there, I highly recommend the base if you are planning to go overseas in Europe. How does your friend like the PA program, I was looking that as well but I really want to work as a Mental Health Nurse... I know pretty crazy right. A lot of people gives me the crazy look but hey it's something I'm interested in.

I forgot...my friend works in the dental clinic. She hasn't started the program yet, she starts in August, but she was accepted last year. She always says that we can come visit (I am at Spangdahlem), but we haven't made it to Italy yet....

Kynchanted,

Thank you again for all your help! But you should definitely, make it to Italy. I love it there -- I only have a year and a half left there so I will definitely try to make the best of it.

Take care and good luck with your classes. I'm in Iraq right now and I am working with the Combat Support Hospital so it's kind of cool knowing some of the ARMY nurses and getting their inputs.

Once again, thanks for everything!

Okay one more question.. sorry

What college did you take for the following classes below??? The only science class that I can take through my school is anatomy and physiology I & chemistry I / Microbiology... but the rest below is not available??

anatomy and physiology II (labs required)

- chemistry II (labs required)

Thanks again!

Do you have to apply to a college where they have a bedded facility nearby?? I read you can attend nursing school where you are currently located or PCS to a nursing college nearby a bedded facility like Univ. of Maryland?? My hubby is currently knocking out his NECP Prereqs in hopes of applying and making the NECP but not until next year....We are hoping to move to Colorado...Any input?

Hi! Actually funny you should ask that, I just got done emailing Mr. B (the NECP POC) and he said that applicants no longer have to apply to schools near bedded facilities and that if an applicant is accepted to multiple schools, the applicant can choose which school they want to attend. Last year, the military would decide where you went if you submitted multiple letters of acceptance, and if any one was near a bedded facility, that is where you went usually. He said the change was because two new NTP sites have been added that aren't near bedded facilities. Please let me know if you have any questions or need further clarification, and good luck to your hubby! :)

Hi! I think you have UMUC on base at Aviano. I took A&P 1 and 2, Chem 1 and Microbio (all with labs) through them. I took College Bio with Lab through Pikes Peak Community College in Colorado. Although the NECP guidelines say you need two chem classes, if you apply to schools that only require Chem 1 (and show that on your Form 48, degree plan), you don't have to take Chem 2. I haven't taken Chem 2 and I have applied to four schools in Florida that don't require it as well as University of Maryland, Baltimore. It seems to vary from state to state whether you will need 2 chem classes or not. Anyway, the schools in Florida that only require Chem 1 are Florida State University (FSU), University of Florida (UFl), University of Central Florida (UCF), and University of South Florida (USF). It is kinda hard to find schools that offer anything other than Microbio online with lab, so I don't have much experience in that area if that is what you are looking for (sorry!).

The facebook NECP site is at http://www.facebook.com/#!/group.php?gid=133768093306112

or under the search engine, type in USAF NECP.

I have no problem answering questions, but some people on facebook may have some more info on online schools and such that offer sciences with labs. We have 82 members on there now, some prospective applicants like us and others were actually selected last year and are currently in school. It's a great support group (outside of this site). Check it out! :)

By the way, I got accepted to University of Maryland! Just found out today! :lol2:

Congrats!!! I'm happy for you.. hopefully I will get as lucky ;) ... hey I just added the site on facebook. That just made my day that I don't have to take Chem 2 depending on the school that I apply for. Yes, we have UMUC here in Aviano and I guess I will have to take A&P 2 with them and rest with my school. thank you again -- ur awesome!

Hey everyone, I plan to apply for NECP as well. I am stationed in Germany and PCS next Feb, so I have to apply this year, or from what I understand I have to be on station for a year before I can reapply. I am a little behind on getting my package together as I was on emergency leave for the last 3 weeks.

I applied to UTHSCSA and WAyland Baptist, and I am in the process of retaking the TEAS. I took it while on emergency leave on a whim and I did okay, but didnt do as well as I wanted. I also didnt know I could take it at the education office, or else I wouldnt have rushed to take it while I was in the states on Emergency Leave... I do have the manual, and only looked through it once or twice.. so this time I got the online assessment as well.

My concern is my GPA. I only have a 3.45 on my NECP pre-req because I sucked at Chemistry! I took it a while ago before I even thought about going into Nursing and I got the grade I got and never looked back. I thought about retaking it to raise my GPA, but the times UMUC was offering Chem I, I was at the NCOA, then taking all those other classes at once.. so I had to make a decision to just got for it with what I have.

I also overloaded myself during our ORE's and ORI and took Psych, Nutrition, Micro and stats all at once.. 2 A's, 2 B's.. fell just shy of an A in Stats because I forgot to do an assignment :crying2: worth 2 points!! Micro was another story.. wouldnt recommend taking that in a 7 week course.. way too much info for such a short class.. My overall GPA for UTHSCSA was closer to a 3.6 because Im finished with all but Develp psych and did well on all of thier pre-reqs...

Anyhow, does anyone have any idea on how they rack and stack the packages.. I know the higher your GPA the more competitive you are.. I also have to take my PT test at the end of the month since I missed it while on EM leave.

One last thing, how did your Chief Nurse interview go? Im freaked out about that the most!! lol

Yekpewa21 first of all take a deep breath and relax. Now that's out of the way. I'm a 2nd semester nursing student at UMSL in th NECP program. I was picked up last semester and my GPA was only 3.2 due to terrible grades from class I took 15 years before when I was young and concerned more with partying than school and I only got a 79 due back problems on my PFT and I was selected. I know someone that was selected last year with a GPA a little lower than mine as well. With a 3.45 GPA I think you are very competitive for NECP. As far as the CN interview it was very relaxed. My CN looked over my overall package and talked to me about how he thought my package stacked up. He asked me about how I would handle various situations and then we pretty much talked about nursing in the AF and the opportunities available as far as what career path I wanted to take. Anyway I'm not on often with school and all but I wll check back occasionally and answer any questions I see posted. Good luck on this year's board.

Awesome, Thanks!! I do have one more question if you are willing to answer for me....Does the NP have to be complete in 2 years?? I find that alot of the NP in colleges are 3 years long and don't really offer Nursing summer courses.....

Hi! Yes, you have to complete the program in two years. You don't have to take summer courses (if your school doesn't offer them, you either have to work at the ROTC detachment or you can take summer classes (6 credits minimum)). All of the three-year programs are out, unless you complete one year on your own while AD and then apply to NECP, which is hard because most schools offer day classes and then you have clinicals as well. I know a girl who applied to NECP last year who applied to a school in the summer but then had her Form 48 (degree plan) start in the fall. This wasn't because the program was over two years, this is just what she decided to do. She basically took an entire summer of leave to go to school (and paid for it on her own with GI Bill and TA). Luckily she was accepted to NECP so she is there now. It was a good thing she applied in the summer because the cutoff GPA for fall 2010 was a 3.77 (it was a 3.67 for the summer). Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but it does have to be two years or less.

I am working on my pre-reqs for NECP and I need to know if the class - principles of nutrition counts as your nutrition class. I'm pretty sure that it does but I need to know for sure from someone that has completed it. Thank you!
