Thinking of switching out of LTC to something else

Specialties Geriatric

Published

It's been almost a year since I've been working nights in LTC and I want to switch to another speciality however since I eventually want to go to grad school for either advanced practice or administration (grad schools do not seem count LTC for experience).

What exactly would be a speciality that would best capitalize on my skills without being a complete shock to me. For example the ICU would be the complete for me, less patients but very indepth care.

Off topic, some nurses in my job get annoyed when they are called LTC nurses, they say that they work at a "skilled nursing facility". Is there such a difference? It seems to be an insurance definition right now to me.

I feel the same way, I have been working in LTC (working on 6 months) and I don't care for it. Too many patients and everything that happens, the nurse is expected to deal with, and youg et yelled at when you don't finish things on time, like it's even humanly possible to do safely. I want to go to a hospital but I have to get my experience and I am working on my BSN now... I REALLLLYYYYY don't want to get pegged as just a "LTC NURSE" not that there's anything wrong with it, but it's NOT for me. Skilled and LTC nurses are looked upon as the same thing I'm afraid.

I'll try not to take offense at the LTC nurse thing..:) How about a nurse practitioner specializing in geriatrics? It requires more education than A BSN, but would capitalize on your current skills!
