Non-nursing question about Floyd County

U.S.A. Georgia

There is a strong possiblity that my family will relocate to Rome in the next two years. I am trying to research schools as I have 3 boys (10,7,3). If you live in Floyd - what is your opinion of Rome City schools vs. Floyd county schools? I see where the Armuchee district looks good, but I just wondered about the city schools. Thanks!

I live in Bartow County but work in Floyd County. I know alot of my coworkers like the Armurchee school district. Rome High is very large. Pepperell is very competitive sports wise (cheer, football, wrestling). There are two or three private schools. Darlington (MD's kids go), Unity Christian School, and St. Mary's. I think the Floyd County Schools are physically older. :nurse:

I grew up in Rome and went to Armuchee. It's a really small school and being rural it doesn't have much in the way of AP classes or extracurriculars. If you want the most bang for your buck send them to Darlington. Just keep in mind it's private & $$$$$$$! Rome high is the newest and largest in the area, but it tends to have a reputation as a ghetto school. Model & Pepperell are basically the same as Armuchee, except older and slightly larger.

They all have their plusses and minuses. Good luck!

Thanks so much! I don't know anything about the Rome area. My husband will be working at Shorter and I hope to get a job at Floyd Medical. I figured living in Rome would be the best bet for both of us to have a really short commute. I don't really know anything about the surrounding cities or their school systems.

There is also Redmond Regional. They have an open heart program and do interventional cardiology. Floyd is the tramua Center and maternity center and peds in the county. Most of the Rome Medical Community (MD wise) is owned by a place called the Harbin Clinic. You can PM me for any other info...

Good Luck!

I live in Rome and have a Son that has been in the Rome City schools since kindergarden. He is now a Freshman at Rome High. Rome High is large but it is also the number 1 school in the State by SAT scores. There Band is Frist class, football team is great also, along with all other sports. My son has a learning Disablity and he has truly had a wonderfull experance with Rome. Don't let its size scare you.

Armurchee is also a good school. My best friends childern go there and although there High school has a littel diferant standerds in dress, ie. at Rome you must dress for scuess, shirts tucked in for boy's and no bagy pants, It is also a good school. There Band is on the way up.

As you can tell my son is in the band so I know more about that. My advise to you is to come to Floyd County and visit All of the schools and decide for your self.

I know that at Rome they are happy to talk with parents and show them around. As a child with a LD I could have put him in any school, city, couinty or privent and the state would pay for tuition but I choose ROME. Hope this helps.

fyi! refurring to the poster before. rome high is not  a getto school anymore. it is the number 1 school in the state! also, my gyn's son, who is my son's age went to darlington untill this year, and is now at rome high. darlington may take mega bucks to go to but it also has more drugs and guns than the other 5 schools put together. also, there scores just don't add up. those kids can afford them.

rome does have some inner city kids but we are a team and on campus we are wolves and nothing else! please check out the above links to find out the truth about the wolves!!:yeah:

we also have floyd medical center, redmond reg, northwest regianal, and harbin clinic - which is the largest priveitly owned clinic in the south. we are also leading the nation in electrionic medical recourds. floyd, redmond and harbin all have state of the art imaging accquipment and are linked so that if you have a ct at one then have a mri at the other all films can be removed. this is a fantastic city to live in.

Great information. Thanks. My seven year old has a learning disability as well. He attends a private school in Fulton county just for kids with learning disabilities (we receive SB10 funds). I'm not really sure what to do for him when we move, I had planned on a smaller christian school, but it is good to know that Rome City cares for its special needs students.

We have several RELLY good LD elementry schools in Rome City two of them are West End. Which is were my son went and then I think the other is either Elm Street or West Central. Please call the Rome City School board and talk with the Director of Special Education for Rome City. She is wonderful. She her self has been at all of my son's IEP meetings. Please call or email her and she can help you find the best school for your child. please feel free to email me if I can help.:nuke:

Maybe it's because I'm just old enough to remember when Rome was divided into East Rome & West Rome high schools. Now THEY were ghetto to the extreme, to the point that even Iraqi insurgents would be terrified of them! Maybe Rome, as a unified and much newer and prettier school, made it work. When I was a HS student in 1993 though, they were still working out the "kinks", lead not included.

I am kinda jealous about Rome students though. If I went there I would have signed up for the swim & soccer teams, something I couldn't do at Armuchee (though AHS has since added a Soccer team).

And SAT scores? Shoot, my STAR student got a 1200! Needless to say we weren't too concerned with things like "standardized tests" until HOPE came around. Of course, all you had to do to get into UGA back then was to show your belt buckle (and for nursing schools too) and you'd get admitted. Things change a lot in 15 years don't they?

Yes I to was in Rome at Model during 1993. I know what East and West Rome were like and the fear of what would happen when the schools merged but belive it or not the school is now the best one in the State. Kids from Rome High have no problem getting into any school in the nation.

My point is not to decide and give advise on 15 year old info. All of the high schools have changed. Well execpt maybe Coosa and it is still red neck High, and has been since my mother graduated there in 1961. Rome is not the place it was in 1993.
