Is Emory's Nursing School worth the extremely high tuition??

Is Emory's School of Nursing worth the extremely high tuition?? I got into Emory for this upcoming fall and I was all ready to go. I didn't get into my school's nursing program for the fall (GCSU). Now I just found out my school accepted me for their Spring program. At first I was going to go to Emory no matter what, but now i'm having second thoughts because of the heavy burden of loan money i'm going to have to borrow. If anyone has gone or is going to Emory's nursing school, let me know how tuition costs affected you. Thanks!

They scholarships like NEAT and CHANCES that could help aleviate some of the costs.

Yeah I applied for both of them and didn't get it. I barely got any financial aid from Emory apparently because my parents make too much. But that doesn't mean they are paying for any of it. I've tried every hospital in atlanta and none of them offer anything close to the NEAT or the CHANCES programs. Thanks for your advice though!

Well, the other alternative, if you wish, is to work for them (emory) and they pay 80% of ur tuition...I know ir is hard to work and go to sch at the same time...how about the state schools. Just out of curiosity, what are the requirements for NEAT and CHANCES..I thought once u are accpeted into the prog. its automatic?

I wish it was automatic. You have to apply for them, and they only accept a certain amount. CHANCES is especially competitive. They only take a few out of over a 100-150 applicants. I was really relying on the NEAT. I thought that it was pretty guarenteed but they told me they selected who they wanted and that's it. You can work for Emory before you become an RN?? I would definitely do that, but what would they hire you as?

Yes you can work for them but not as an RN...you could work as a Nurse Tech / Nurses Assist..Best of luck

thanks, i'll look into that. I heard you can't work as a nurse tech until after your first semester of nursing school.

Hey there,

I'm a former Emory employee(social worker), and no you won't be able to go to nursing school with the educational benefit program. The reason is the nursing program is fulltime and you have to work fulltime to be eligible. And it only can be used for a limited number of course hours per semester. Look under benefits on the Emory website for details or call Human resources and get the facts. http://www.emory.edu Trust me if I could have used it I would have. And I did use their tuition reimbursement benefit to pay for my classes I took for prerequisites. But that was one class per semester, at night. Emory is a terrific school, but the other you have been accepted to has a great reputation as well. Good luck! I am attending Kennesaw State University and graduate 7/30/07. I think of it as Emory quality for a state price!!!

Ditto to the rejection of Neat and Chances. You have to decide if it's worth it to you to invest so much in your future. That's how I look at it. It's a tough program. I graduated this May. Just took my boards this weekend and passed w/ 76 on NCLEX. I believe my pass success is owed to the training I got from them.

But if only they could secure me a job!!!! Emory as a private U, has a very smug and spoiled child attitude. If you survive that and ace your courses, you'll be fine

My maternity rotation was at ECH. LOVED it! Had all but one fabulous mentor. And she was a total ***** bigot in the NICU. She ignored me the whole shift and I reported my fears and anger to my clinical instructor who saw w/ her own eyes. She couldn't put me on any other duty that day, but allowed me to watch a PDA surgery w/ some pretty fab docs that let me watch up close.

Emory is there for you if you put yourself into a popularity contest. I wasn't. And quite a few of my classmates (and myself at one point) were on antidepressants. The older ones actually. Many of these students are trust funds kids or fr wealthy fams. How the hell I got in, I'll never know. Except this was a 2nd degree for me.

If you are young and like to go to be involved in clubs et al, you should do well. I suffered b/c the folks I got along w/ went home to their husbands/wives/families (the older crowd) at the end of the day and many didn't make it through medsurg and stayed back a year.

WOW... this is a second degree for me. I am really just focused on school. I have already done the parties and after class clubs. I'm ready to focus on me. I got the NEAT so I hope to work at ECH L&D. I hate the fact that it might be a popularity contest to vie for the attention of professors. This is the first time I have heard this about the school. Trust fund babies is an interesting analogy. I would think that they would have a hard time adjusting to the work schedule and the pressures of the work place. I've held several jobs so I know about 1) what it means to hit a clock 2) the fact that in the work place you are not special, just abother employee. Could u tell me if the three days of BSN orientation are pretty adequate for first time emory students. What i mean is i must get my emory card nd buy books. i wonder if i will get all the info i need at orientation or will i struggle to put the pieces together on my own.THANKS
