Ok I just need to pat myself on the back for a second!
I 'm finding that every nurse has "their thing" that grosses them out.
For many it's sputum. Or vomit...
For me it's trach care....
I don't get sick or anything, but when a patient has a trach, and they start to choke, I start to gag with them!
Ohhhhh! Even the thought of having to do deep suction on a trach patient, makes me tremble.
I know I don't need to freak out when giving trach care, especially 'cause the pt usually is a bit anxious when their air way is threatened.
Well, I told my clinical instructor about my issue, because I knew I needed to deal with the issue.
So I had a trach patient this week. And guess what??!!!!!
I DID IT !!!!!!!!!
I didn't gag once! I was calm and handled it fine! Two days in a row!!
Yay!
Ok thanks for listening!

Misty,
Way to go. Now it'll be easier to handle trach pts. The one thing that I can't handle is when the pt gags, that makes me gag. My dr. said that I have a hyperactive gag reflex.LOL. My dentist has written on my chart in big red letters...GAGGER! 8^) LOL

I can't handle trach care either. Just looking at a goobery trach makes me want to hurl. I've done it quite a few times and it gets me every time.
