How many hours a week do you recommend a nursing student work?

I work full time right now as a CNA but I need to go part time once I start the program next month. I am married but do not have kids. My husband works full time and we rent an apartment. It is not 100% necessary for me to be full time.

I know that everyone has different thresholds for how much work they can handle while they're in the program, but I for sure cannot do full time and be successful - I know myself too well. I would be too overwhelmed.

There is a nursing school in my area (not the one I'm going to) that requires you to sign a contract for them saying that you cannot work more than 20 hrs a week and you can't work the day before a clinical. I am wondering if even 20 hours would be too much?

I just wanted to know from those who found an appropriate balance for themselves. :)

I'm in WA as well, got into RentonTC's nursing program. I started a new night shift Patient Care Tech job at the hospital and I work full time 36 hours a week. I don't have a choice but to work. And plus it took me two years to land a hospital job I just can't pass it up. I like the idea of having my "foot in the door" since getting a nursing job after graduation can be really hard nowadays.

OP, in my prenursing days I worked 20 some hours a week and took 21 credit hours. I would NEVER be able to do that in Nursing school. I still work 16-24 hours a week but only take 12-15 credits a semester. I have a few suggestions for you. 1) Study every day, except maybe one (everyone needs a break) If you are working a 12 one day a week I would probably choice that as an off day, and study on the shorter day. 2) When you are at work use it as a learning experience. (My nurses loved when I worked because I would practice my assessment skills and that meant they could do a quick more focused assessment if they knew I already had checked for skin sores/ROM and the like. I always asked the patients first, but they never minded I just explained that I was practicing and they enjoyed the attention. When they would have abnormal vitals or changes I would try to related it back to the disease process (the nurses would tell me why they were in). 3) Plan everything :D! If you have something due weekly have a certain day each week that you will do it. Ex: I have papers due wednesday so every friday I do them for the next week, if something comes up push it back one day. 4) I would not work the day before clinical even if it is allowed. You will already be exhausted. 5) Take advantage of any study time, bring flashcards/notes/ or a smart phone everywhere, if you have 15-20 minutes of time review. If possible reread your notes within 24 hours of class. Studies have proved it helps commit the information to long term memory. Im sure I have more tips but that is all I can think of at the moment. Feel free to PM me. Good luck with school!
