Some Optimism :)

Nursing Students General Students

so i'm in my 2nd semester of nursing and love it! but i've come to realize there are going to be really amazing days and really bad days, i just wanted share with fellow nursing students a helpful experience. so friday was a horrrrrible day for me, i mean horrible. i had my second adult 1 exam (covering respiratory, endocrine, gallbladder and diabetes) i studied tuesday, wednesday and thursday from the time i woke up (8:30-9:00) till about midnight (when the library closed). i studied the most i had studied for an exam and was even helping classmates. well i take the exam and we grade it right after and it turns out i got a 65?! what? really?! needless to say i had my first nursing breakdown after that, it was just so discouraging. but i went and talked to my professor and it helped! she reassured me that i was in no danger (because i had a 89 for the first exam) and she went through the whole exam with me in her office. it really helped me to see that i need to just take my time with tests and really learn my lab values. so i was pretty bummed all weekend and it just drove me to study even harder for my ob exam i had yesterday.

the optimistic part is that i had clinical yesterday and it went fine for the most part but then i got an email from my clinical instructor today saying what a great job i did yesterday and the floor manager said so herself and how she could see a difference in me since the beginning of the semester!? furthermore she bumped my concept map grade up from an 85 to 90 for effort?! how encouraging was that? the fact that i did so well in my clinical yesterday just really helped i mean clinical is where you want to do well because essentially that's where you're going to be, right? don't get me wrong i'm not going to blow my tests off now because of one good day, but it helps.

i guess the point of this thread is that don't be discouraged by one bad day or one really horrible test. better days are sure to come. just remember that my friends :)

It's nice to see nursing students trying to stay positive and see the brighter side of things. I would enjoy having more classmates like you. I get SO frustrated with my fellow classmates because they all slack off, complain of the long school days, complain about the teachers, the questions on the exams, and any extra time they have to put in and in generall seem to be unhappy about having to even be in class on most days.

Good job regaining control of your emotions and being responsible and having a meeting with your instructor. It seems that going to your instructors for clarification of materials, expectations, or just to vent really can have a positive effect on your nursing school experience. Keep up the positive outlook, it will only benefit you and make nursing school more enjoyable =)
