So my first semester of nursing school is almost over

Well, my first semester is almost over and all I have to say is thank god. We are at this transitional place where people are not sick enough to be in the hospital but to sick to go back home or the nursing home. boring. hardly anything goes on there. some wounds now and then, 1 person who was straight cathed, and 2 tube feedings. other than that not much. other than the fact that we are the nurse and the aide. I am sick of bedpans and wiping butts. grrrr. I know that we need to know how to do that job but learning how to wipe butts and do bedbaths is not rocket science. I was offered a job as a nurse tech after this semester thankfully. no aide duties. the DON told that being an aide is worthless to a nursing student. Now before people flip out. i now that i will have to do the duties sometimes but all the time as a part of my job? no thanks. I am not spending all this time and money to do that. i read that post about the aide that told the student she wasn't cut out to be a nurse and that really ticked me off. It is obvious were we are that the aides (ones who are not going to nursing school) resent people that are moving past minimum wage. but anyway, there just isn't much action going on in this place once we are done with passing meds, am assessments, and bedbaths. after that stuff we just kinda wander around. i can't wait until next semester when we are in the hospital. if there isn't anything going on in our area they will find us something in other areas. plus we get to go watch surgrey. i am so excited for that. i think that is where i want to be. anyway sorry for the vent,

Program I'm in thinks masive amounts of clinical time (200+) is usefull. By midday we are twiddling our tumbs. Upperclassmates state the same thing. Really only need half days. Several whole days in a row without frequent patient discharges occuring winds up wasting time as well.

Kris,

I know how you feel, we have 3 more weeks to go....I don't know where the semester went but it's over. I'll have my fourth test on Wednesday, and I have to get at least an 80 or I"m out of the program.... :o . I've been studying like I've never studied before....it's going to be on Fluid and Electrolytes and Nutrition. So send some vibes my way....lol. I agree with clinicals, this semester we were in Extended Care Facilities......2 of the sites were in well-to-do cities and one was in a very poor city. This is where I am...I do value it though.....we have learned to make do with the supplies we have.....we have dealt with many different personalities...etc, etc. Next semester we're going to be doing Med-Surg....yippppeeeeee!!!!...
