Second Degree BSN in NYC

Nursing Students General Students

Published

Hi Everyone.

I am pondering going back to school for nursing. I went to pharmacy school for about 6-7 years before I was dismissed from the program. I actually wanted to do nursing first but was talked out of it by my nurse mother who now is all about nursing (Go figure). In any case, I am worried about admissions for all the NYC schools. Since I did poorly in pharm school, I do not meet the cumulative GPA minimum for applying for second degree BSN programs. My cumulative was a 2.55. This would require me to retake some of the prerequisites listed in most of the BSN programs. It seems that Hunter will not accept you if you have retake any prerequisites and may not even be an option. I was thinking of registering for CUNY classes as a non-degree student first, but I'm worried about being locked out of science courses. Also, my school did something weird. They combined general chemistry and organic chemistry and condensed it into 3 terms (1.5 years) instead of 2 years, and I'm not sure how that would affect transfer credits. Does anyone have any tips, suggestions or insight? Has anyone gone back for a second degree in nursing? What was your experience like with any of the NYC schools?

Thanks.

You might get more concise answers if you posted this in the NY forum?

Generally, when it comes to transfer credits, only the individual school is going to be able to tell you how they/what will transfer. How old are the science classes? Many times you are required to redo them if they're older than a certain age (around here I think it's 5years).

Hi BeachyRN2Be,

The courses that I took range from 2004-2007. I guess this is something I would need to retake if the school will only accept them as if they're within 5 years (which I think is better for me so I can take refreshers).

Do you know if any of the other NYC schools will not take repeated pre-req courses like Hunter?

Thanks!

Unfortunately, I am not from NY so I am not familiar with the schools specifically.
