Question about pediatric employment

Hi,

I wanted to know if anyone knows if hiring supervisors specifically at a children's hospital/unit look at the school the student went to (being an R.N.)? There are many programs and some are not hard to get in to.

Esme is right. You are best off going to a college or university instead of one of the "technical" programs like Bryant and Stratton, etc. Most places are hiring Bsn also.

I am from Nebraska.. and the Children's Hospital in Omaha is a magnet hospital. As of August 2012, they will only hire BSN students. Also, they are now implementing a nurse residency program, which is two years long for all new graduates. Needless to say, I would go with a BSN just so you can go wherever your heart desires for peds!

I work for a children's hospital and we definitely consider the quality of the school the new graduate attended. We have a strong preference for nurses with a BSN and even then, we prefer to hire new grads only from the better quality schools. We do make exceptions sometimes when we are particularly impressed by an applicant ... but it is definitely an advantage to "be the best from the best" as Esme12 said. There is a lot of competition for the more desirable jobs.

Thank you all for your comments. I am going to try to go to a good school. I feel I am the one of the 'best' as far as caring and doing a diligent job, but I have to see about the kind of school. I feel I have the 'type of personality' for the pediatric ICU. I always have a smile on my face, but afraid to get stepped on.
