pronation or supination?

One book (James, Ashwill, Droske) says that brachioradialis reflex response is "pronation and flexion of the elbow"

The other book (Jarvis) says brachioradialis reflex response is "supination and flexion of the forearm"

is it pronation or supination?

James ashwill and droske is for pediatrics, right? And jarvis is adults? Is it possible the reflex is different in children than adults?

good question - does anyone know if there is a difference?

(there's a difference for Babinski but that changes at about 12 months of age)

I would say pronation with flexion

I would say pronation with flexion

thanks, and what additional reference could you add?

The brachiradialis muscle acts to flex the forarm at the elbow...but it does do both, both pronation and supination...it all depends on the position of the forarm. When it is pronated, the bracioradialis is more active during elbow flexion since the bic. brachii is in a mechanical disadvantage...When I looked at my Gray's book.....it wasn't too helpful! This could be a tricky one....it does both yet stronger with pronation. Hope this helps:idea:

Ginger Sue....I am so sorry;{ I went back to read your question....you want the reflex....not the action...I'll be back!

I believe it is pronation (adult)

I believe it is pronation (adult)

thanks,

but Jarvis, writing about adults, with adult photograph, says "supination and flexion"

and James, writing about children, says flexion and pronation.

I don't know
