To actually be certified, yes, there is a written exam. There are a couple different organizations you can choose from to do that. But be aware that most states don't require certification and most employers don't pay more for certification.

I don't know anything about the EKG situation.

For some reason I am unable to go back and type in the middle of that first sentence, but it refers to phlebotomy.

What are the requirements for EKG exam?

ASCP (American Society of Clinical Pathologists) is one certifying body. Assuming you can find a facility that maintains a phleb team, it would demonstrate proficiency that could bring more $, as a "Senior Phleb". Written exam, with 2 year work experience pre-requisite. It may also help you, if you get into nursing education.

I'm not sure about the EKGs...
