Patients and incontinence care

Hello.

If a patient is using briefs/diapers because of incontinence, do you clean the patient after every brief/diaper change? Do you clean the member/lady parts and behind too?

Also, do you clean the patient "down there" when getting him/her ready for bed?

Sorry for bad English.

Thanks.

Short answer - Yes. There are enzymes and other substances in urine and feces that will cause skin breakdown & increased risk of infection. Many organizations also have incontinence protocols that include protective barriers (cream, lotion, etc) that must be applied after a thorough cleansing.
