NLN Nutrition Exam

Has anyone taken the NLN Normal Nutrition Exam recently? I'm taking it in an attempt to avoid the class, however, I'm finding the study guide to be very difficult. Any advice: how you studied, how the exam is structured (is it multiple choice, essay...) is appreciated!!

Thanks!!

FYI, I just took the exam & passed! For anyone wondering because I searched & found no help at all, here's what I did:

I (speed) read through a nutrition textbook-- "Nutrition for Health and Healthcare" is the one I used. I had also gotten a study guide from my school, I used the textbook & Google to help me complete that. Lastly, NLN actually has 2 practice tests for the nutrition exam. They were $6 on their testing website & immediately usable. Those helped to figure out not only the structure of the exam but also how to take the exam on the computer. I wouldn't use those exams as the primary method for studying, but it helped me to understand the types of questions that would be asked. The test wasn't terribly difficult, a lot of it is common sense, but for sure studying how & what I did allowed me to pass.

Hi AimeeL,

How did the exam go? I'm looking to take it in the next few weeks. Where did you get the study guide? I can't seem to find one!

Thanks!

The exam went well. All my prep worked! The practice tests were tricky to get find. It's been a while so I'm trying to remember, and googling what I can.

If you go to nlnonlinetesting.org, you'll see several icons, including Question Review Bank. You'll have to set up an account but once you do that, you can access the practice test questions. Just make sure you don't access the actual exam! I'm not sure you actually can do that but I was slightly paranoid that I would. There are 2 practice tests. They're pretty short but it helped to figure out how the test was structured and how to do the test on the computer.

Good luck!!

Thanks for the reply! I went on that website and created an account. Then it required an access code, so I emailed their customer support to see what the deal is. I'm sure I'll get to the bottom if it. I figure I'll just book the test and then hunker down and study hard...

Thanks again (I just realized that both posts were by you, so I made you reiterate some info!)

I will add my two cents, since I just passed the NLN Nutrition exam! :)

I prepared for two weeks by reading a "Nutrition for Healthcare Providers" book and listening to some lectures through iTunesU. I also ordered the practice test from the NLN website, only to find out that the exact questions were posted on a flashcard website. It's easy to find if you Google it, but be advised, there are some mistakes on the flashcards (2-3 questions have the wrong answer, if you're studying hard enough, they're pretty obvious). To be sure you found the right flashcards, the first question is about a baby with failure to thrive.

The test itself was harder than I expected. There were a decent amount of questions that were not covered in my book and caught me off guard. Some of the questions were also pretty subjective or did not give enough information in my opinion. I wasn't feeling great about it, but I clicked "Submit for Grading" and crossed my fingers. My grade came up as a percentage and did not have a clear Pass or Fail. Apperantly the school determines what is a passing grade and my school didn't have any idea, so it took a day to get that information, but good news was delivered today and I passed.

Since I could not find it, I will also post number of questions for the NLN Nutrition Exam (125) and time allotment (150 minutes). My school was not clear on the passing grade required for their institution, but I believe it was over a 75%.

Hope this helps, feel free to send me a message with more specific questions or if you'd like a copy of the study guide that I made from my book (it's question/answer format, good for quizzing).

Good luck!

Hi! Thanks to you both for posting about this and suggesting that book! I just ordered it from Amazon and am waiting to schedule my test.

Would you mind sending me the website you used for the flashcards? I did some googling and looked at a bunch of sites, but none of them started with the question regarding a baby failing to thrive.

Thanks again for your help!
