Making Study Groups Work?

Just wondering what has worked for all of you? I find myself in "study groups" a lot, but none of us really seems to know how to focus and stay on topic and I'm wondering if there is some way to do this that I am missing, and that would help us get the most out of eachother's experience. I don't know if its the combination of our personalities and I should try a different "group" or if some well placed suggestions would make it work better or what.

I'm not quite ready to give up on the idea quite yet, as a few impromptu discussions have really helped me on tests. It just seems like every time we sit down together on purpose, nothing gets done other than copying/comparing homework answers and talking about someone's sex life or last drinking escapade.
