Looking for some advice!

Nursing Students General Students

Published

Hi everyone,

I am brand new to this site, but have been looking around it all throughout my years of being a nursing student. I am a Canadian RN student entering my fourth (and final!) year of University. I have an ER placement for my fall semester, and a general surgery placement for my winter semester. Summer holiday is almost over, so I am just starting to think about getting back into the nursing frame of mind, and doing some light preparation. This is the first year I will have a one-on-one preceptor, and I was just looking for some advice as to what a fourth-year preceptor in the ER might be looking for in a student- and how I can impress her/him! I have already made cue cards of commonly used drugs in the ER (since I do not know them all off by heart), and will review assessment skills. Any other ideas?

Thanks so much!

ER is focused on what brought the patient to the ER. If a patient comes in with SOB, can you identify the different lung sounds? Patient with chest pain, can you identify heart rhythms that indicate an acute MI? Practice IV and patient assessment skills.
